Today we’d like to introduce you to Theron Rhoten.
Hi Theron, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
Cap’s Service and Repair was started as a dream, like many businesses are. I’ve loved classic cars since I was a kid, and grew up with auto racing in my family so it was kind of meant to be. My family drag raced through the sixties and then moved to sprint cars in the seventies and raced up until 2011. Every saturday night as a kid found myself either in the grandstands or helping out in the pits with my cousins and Dad. In 1995 my dad and I bought a 1955 Chevy Bel Air and restored it which I then found myself drag racing on the outskirt streets of my hometown. After high school it took a couple years of soul searching to realize I needed do what I love for a living and get back into mechanics. I got a degree in paint and body work, spent a couple years in the field doing that and then found my way back into general mechanics. After working at a few shops over the next fifteen years or so I decided it was time to go out on my own and give running my own place a go. I started off with all my tools taking up most of my two car garage at my house and working out of there until I got so busy I had to rent my first facility out. After about six months I moved into a 1500 square foot shop on the East Side of Austin. Local punk rockers may remember the building as The Broken Neck. They used to do punk and hardcore shows there and had a half pipe for all the skaters. A perfect backdrop for my background in both punk, metal and skateboarding. It only took me another year and a half before I outgrew that spot and moved into my third location, which doubled the space, where I spent seven years. Over those seven years Cap’s grew from one employee to seven and soon outgrew the 3000 square feet we had there. We are now onto our fourth location at 1108 Regal Row and still growing. We love serving the classic car community of Austin and also helping out with any late model vehicles as well. Come see us at the new location!!!
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Every day is a challenge and a new problem to solve. If it were easy, everyone would do it.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Here at Cap’s Service and Repair we specialize in keeping your classic car on the road. We also take care of modern late mode vehicles as well. We can handle anything from a brake job to a full build. We are known for, and especially proud of our attention to detail, honesty and integrity.
Is there anyone you’d like to thank or give credit to?
My employees are the backbone of the company and the best people to be around day in and day out. I love going to battle beside them every day. My mentors I had growing up that got me into all of this are first and foremost my dad. I am very lucky I had him to show me how to take pride in building something with my own two hands. My cousin Eldon also who showed me to never give up and keep gunning for the checkered flag. If it weren’t for those two Cap’s would not exist. I have also been very fortunate in having gotten to work for some really good shop owners and become friends with some that I haven’t worked for as well. Mainly those being, Juke Auto and Austin Speed Shop. Those are two great shops here in Austin your readers should check out. I also worked for some really horrible shop owners who taught me what not to do. So thanks to those guys as well.
