Today we’d like to introduce you to Whitney Taylor.
Whitney, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
My path to interior design wasn’t exactly traditional, and I find that unique journey shapes how I approach creating spaces for my clients. While my formal design training comes from UCLA Ext’s Architecture and Interior Design program, my career started somewhere unexpected: Speech Language Pathology.
Working as an SLP taught me the profound importance of understanding individual needs and perspectives. It’s all about communication, connection and tailoring solutions- principles I now weave into every aspect of my design work.
This unique perspective allows me to approach projects with deep empathy, focusing on creating spaces that truly support and enhance the lives of the individuals and families inhabiting them. This includes a focus on cohesive aesthetics, practical function and even sensory-friendly design considerations.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The path to changing careers, especially after all the grueling hours put into a Master’s Degree in another profession, has been challenging. I often found myself questioning the change, but ultimately my craving for a creative outlet kept pushing me forward. The feedback I have received from clients throughout and at the end of our projects has made all of the challenges worth it!
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
With my background and understanding of communication and sensory needs, I can tap into how to make homeowners actually feel grounded in their space. For example, a client with hearing loss may need to use visual cues while communicating with family. This means, seeing someone’s face as they talk will help them understand the message better. To meet these needs, we may put a swivel chair in the living room for this client so that they can turn toward the tv when needed and turn back toward the family members on the sofa.
What are your plans for the future?
As a new business owner, I am looking forward to connecting more with my community and other small business owners. Additionally, I will continue to refine and streamline my processes tailored toward client needs and communication.
