Today we’d like to introduce you to Alex Whiddon
Hi Alex, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I am proud to be a third-generation contractor with deep roots in the construction industry. My journey began with my father, who moved to Austin in 1992 as a masonry contractor working on large-scale multifamily developments, including notable projects like the Riata Apartments in North Austin. In 1999, he ventured into development, focusing on building office warehouse spaces in Dripping Springs. Around that time, I started my own career as a project engineer for a multifamily company. One of my early projects was the Milago Condos on Rainey Street, which marked the beginning of my experience working on mid-rise and high-rise buildings across Texas.
By 2015, I returned to Austin to assist my father with the construction of the Ten-O-Five office complex at 1005 E. St. Elmo Street. This project housed diverse tenants, including a prosthetics center and the Saatva Mattress company. Following this, I launched my own home-building business, AWhiddon Construction, successfully constructing around 40 spec homes throughout Austin. Most recently, I have partnered with my sister and brother-in-law to start a residential construction company, WGC Group. We are truly a family business, continuing the legacy of quality and dedication in the construction industry that started generations ago.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Construction is never a straightforward journey; every project presents its own unique challenges and complexities. I have learned that no two projects are the same, and each brings its own set of obstacles to overcome. However, I see these challenges as opportunities for growth, and I strive to learn from every mistake to improve and refine my approach for future projects.
Additionally, the construction industry is highly influenced by market fluctuations. A few years ago, we experienced a sudden surge in sales, with houses seemingly selling almost instantly. Today, the market has shifted, and homes are often sitting for four months or more. Navigating these market changes and trying to anticipate future demand is always a challenge, but it’s a vital part of staying ahead in the industry.
As you know, we’re big fans of AWhiddon Construction. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?

The COVID-19 crisis has taught us several important lessons in the construction industry, particularly about adaptability and resilience. We learned how vital it is to be flexible and prepared for unexpected challenges, as each project has its unique set of obstacles, and the pandemic brought unprecedented disruptions.
