Community Highlights: Meet Ali Hopson of MpM Studios

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ali Hopson

Hi Ali , please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
My background skill set is diverse. My professional journey began in government, social services, and politics, but my upbringing in a family of media professionals, writers, and activists always kept calling me back to the creative world. As a child, I honed my love for storytelling through writing, filming, and photography. I use those channels and those early influences in my career as a producer and film location manager.

In addition to her professional work, I serve on the board of Reel Families, an organization dedicated to supporting and empowering crew, parents, and caregivers in the film and television industry.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Being a “unicorn” in the world of film and location management comes with unique challenges. From breaking through systemic biases to constantly proving my worth in spaces that often overlook diverse voices, the journey has been anything but easy.

IN TRUE REALITY CHECK FASHION, these obstacles have forged me into a resourceful problem-solver and a tenacious innovator. In an industry where resources are scarce and support isn’t always guaranteed, I’ve learned to adapt, think creatively, and turn limitations into opportunities.

Failure isn’t the end—it’s a chance to reimagine, rebuild, and grow stronger. Every setback is a lesson, preparing us for greater challenges and equipping me with the tools to succeed. Along the way, I’ve found allies—mentors, peers, and collaborators—who recognize my talent and uplift my voice, reminding me that progress is a collective effort.

The road is tough, but resilience is fueled by the belief that our artist journey isn’t just about overcoming barriers—it’s about paving the way for others, creating space for new voices, and redefining what leadership looks like in this industry. Every challenge brings me closer to building something greater, not just for myself but for the future of this field.

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?

What were you like growing up?
Born in Concord, MA and growing up in Texas, I was surrounded by stories—watching old movies with my father, writing my own tales, and crafting little books I’d sell to anyone willing to buy. My imagination was my playground, nurtured by a mother who recognized the power of creativity. She encouraged me to explore storytelling through animation classes, book-making workshops, and creative writing lessons. These experiences became the foundation for everything I do today, teaching me the importance of imagination, perseverance, and self-expression.

Storytelling is deeply rooted in my family. My grandmother documented our family’s journey from Guyana to the United States, capturing our legacy as Guyanese immigrants and activists in Texas. Her father, my great-grandfather, founded one of the first Black newspapers in Texas, paving the way for amplifying Black voices and advocating for change. Through these stories, I learned the importance of preserving history and giving voice to those often unheard. My mother, a writer and teacher, built on this legacy, inspiring me to see storytelling not just as an art but as a responsibility—a way to connect, educate, and empower.
