Community Highlights: Meet Angel Suarez of Eastar Insurance Group, Corp

Today we’d like to introduce you to Angel Suarez.

Angel , we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
In 1999, I relocated from Puerto Rico to assist my mother with her trucking business. She had lost her work when I arrived, and I needed it to adjust my plans. When I first started working in the hotel sector as a valet parking attendant, I didn’t know a word of English because English was not taught to us in Puerto Rico. I used to avoid that class because I assumed I would never need it. I began asking folks how they pronounce thoughts. Because I use closed captions and learn how to speak, the television has been quite beneficial to me. I still have some difficulties with pronunciation, but I am still learning. I progressed from valet parking attendant to hotel accountant’s assistant and then to hotel manager. While I enjoy working in hotels, the hospitality sector requires that I be available at all times. I met my current wife three months later and asked her to marry me. We are still married a week after the September 11th attacks. My wife desired children, and my primary purpose was to please her, so we had two children, a boy and a younger daughter. My paycheck didn’t last long no matter what position I had in the hotel because of utilities and other expenses. Then I moved to the banking profession, where the compensation was good but I had a feeling there was something better out there.

I had my own business fixing computers and eliminating viruses while working in all of these professions, and I had a large book of business for it. My mother’s computer taught me how to fix computers. While working in banking, I decided to attend flight school and obtain my pilot’s license, and shortly after receiving my license, I purchased my first aircraft, a Cessna 172, a four-passenger single-propeller plane, followed by a Mustang convertible, which I used to fly customers nationwide on my days off. The same year, a windstorm completely destroyed my plane, and on my trip to the airport, a car in front of me collided with the car in front of him, resulting in a seven-car crash, in which I was one of the cars. My plane was destroyed, my automobile was destroyed, and my insurance had expired a week prior to the tragedy.

I chose to leave the bank and take a lower-paying job to protect the individuals I care about and the community from more losses. I studied for and passed my property and casualty insurance license, then opened my own firm with no workers, expensive workstations, or fancy furniture. Only two desks, two laptops, and two chairs were available. My children, now 16 and 18, as well as my wife, will trade shifts every day. Then things improved, and I hired my first employee, followed by the second. I now serve the states of Texas, Florida, Iowa, and Michigan. Because of my workers, I was able to use part of my spare time to obtain my real estate license, and I now work in both insurance and real estate. I graduated in 2018 with a BA in Business Administration from Ashford University San Diego.

Eastar is at the center of all of my business activities and investments, in my opinion. I stop mending computers and devote the majority of my time to Eastar. I also volunteer at the Live Oak Park and Recreation Department. In Live Oak, Texas, I was elected to the City Council. I’ve written numerous books, including two best sellers, and now my brother-in-law and I have formed a new transportation venture called Points A-2-B, with the goal of making freight services more cheap and providing free load boards to truck drivers across the country. I own three planes, including a Lincoln, and I hire people. My family is an integral component of my success; without them, I would not be where I am today. My wife is always pushing me to go to church and help in church ministries, and my mother is always giving me sound advice. But it is my children that motivate me to do all of this.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
It has not been an easy journey. Language has been one of my greatest challenges; it has taken me a long time to understand and speak English. Another challenge is balancing being a father, husband, and son while also being the only family member my mother has in Texas. I attempt to clean her house, take out the trash, and talk to her three days a week. She makes money, but it doesn’t last long these days, so I assist her financially. When I first relocated, my great-grandma suffered a stroke, and we took care of her by bathing her, changing her, and cleaning her room because she couldn’t move. My grandma then suffered a stroke and developed dementia, leaving my mother and myself as her sole caregivers. We had some family members visit for a day or two, but we were responsible for both grandmothers for a long time.

We’ve been impressed with Eastar Insurance Group, Corp, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Eastar provides insurance for automobiles, homes, and businesses. From 18-wheeler trucks to general contractors, we help small business owners with their insurance needs. We also have residential and commercial properties available. Filling costs are never charged to persons on government food stamps, Medicaid, Medicare, or Veterans. We provide free assistance to drivers with suspended licenses on how to apply for an occupational driver license and waive court expenses. We also have a rater that allows us to compare and offer solutions to our clients by giving us access to all of our partners’ insurance prices. Since the COVID19 pandemic, we have not charged first responders any filling or agency costs.

Where do you see things going in the next 5-10 years?
My industry is rapidly expanding. By 2023, the insurance industry is expected to rise by 18.3 percent. With online quotations and websites, getting a policy is even easier than before.
