Today we’d like to introduce you to Carly Olinger
Hi Carly , so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
**Title: Breaking the Mold: A Journey Through Beauty and Empowerment**
From a young age, the world of beauty was not just an industry; it was a home. Surrounded by the vibrant colors of cosmetics and the intoxicating scents of skincare, I grew up in a family deeply rooted in the beauty sector. My mother, a dedicated professional in cosmetics and skincare, my aunt, a talented hairstylist, and my best friend’s mother, who owned a bustling salon, all played pivotal roles in shaping my early perceptions of beauty and self-expression.
Despite this rich backdrop, I’ve always been a bit of a “go against the grain” kind of girl. Driven and determined, I’ve never been one to let obstacles stand in my way. The idea of giving up simply wasn’t in my vocabulary. It was this fierce spirit that propelled me to pursue my passion for the salon world, even if it meant making difficult choices.
The day I decided to drop out of high school was a turning point in my life. I could feel my mother’s heart drop as I broke the news, but I knew I had to follow my dreams. The very next day, I enrolled in beauty school, and by the time I turned 18, I was already working in a salon. It felt like I had finally found my place in the world.
As I navigated my early career, I was fortunate to work alongside some of the most incredible stylists in the industry. Each experience was a stepping stone, allowing me to learn from leading experts and hone my skills. I soaked up every lesson, every technique, and every creative insight, knowing that this was just the beginning of my journey.
When I’m not behind the chair, creating hair magic for my clients, I’m channeling my passion into my other venture: Wten & Wild. This clean beauty business, co-founded with my mom, is a labor of love. We proudly carry over 70 different clean skincare and makeup brands, each selected for their commitment to quality and sustainability. It’s a dream come true to not only work in beauty but to also promote products that align with my values.
At the heart of my work is a simple belief: how you look can greatly impact how you feel. I strive to help people feel their best, whether it’s through a fresh haircut, a bold new color, or the right skincare product. I find immense joy in empowering those around me to shine a little brighter.
In a world that often tries to define beauty through narrow lenses, I am committed to breaking the mold. My journey is a testament to the power of following one’s passion, embracing individuality, and uplifting others in the process. As I continue to grow in the beauty industry, I remain dedicated to my mission: to inspire confidence, celebrate uniqueness, and transform how we perceive beauty—one client at a time.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
In an ever-evolving world, the service industry remains a vibrant tapestry of human connection, creativity, and resilience. For those of us in the salon business, this journey is anything but straightforward. The path is often paved with challenges, but it is also rich with opportunities for growth, learning, and ultimately, success. As I reflect on my career, I recognize that the struggles I faced were not mere obstacles, but stepping stones that shaped me into the professional I am today.
From the very beginning, my foray into the salon industry was filled with uncertainty. The first challenge was mastering the craft itself. While passion for hair and beauty fueled my ambition, the technical skills required to excel in this field were daunting. Countless hours spent in training, practicing on mannequin heads, and seeking mentorship from seasoned stylists were essential. Each misstep—be it a botched haircut or a color that didn’t quite turn out as planned—was a lesson learned the hard way. Yet, rather than allowing these setbacks to deter me, I embraced them. Each failure became an opportunity for growth, pushing me to refine my techniques and expand my knowledge.
As I gained confidence in my skills, I faced another layer of struggle: building a loyal clientele. In an industry that thrives on relationships, establishing trust and rapport with clients is paramount. Initially, I struggled with self-promotion and marketing. How do you convince someone to sit in your chair when there are countless other talented stylists vying for their attention? I learned that authenticity is key. By being genuine, listening to my clients’ needs, and delivering exceptional service, I gradually built a loyal following. The smiles on their faces and the sparkle in their eyes when they left my salon became my greatest rewards.
However, the journey didn’t stop there. The service industry is often characterized by long hours, intense physical demands, and emotional labor. Burnout became a real threat. Balancing work and personal life was a constant juggling act, and there were moments when I felt overwhelmed. It was during these times that I discovered the importance of self-care and setting boundaries. I learned to prioritize my well-being, carving out time for rest and rejuvenation. This shift not only improved my mental health but also enhanced my performance, allowing me to show up for my clients with renewed energy and enthusiasm.
The salon industry is also a microcosm of broader societal changes. Trends come and go, and staying relevant requires adaptability and a willingness to innovate. I faced the challenge of keeping up with ever-changing styles and techniques, as well as navigating the impact of technology on our work. Social media emerged as a powerful tool, and I had to learn how to harness it effectively to showcase my work and connect with potential clients. Embracing change, rather than resisting it, became a crucial mantra in my career.
Despite the struggles, I have also experienced countless moments of joy and fulfillment. The relationships I’ve built with clients and colleagues have enriched my life immeasurably. I’ve had the privilege of being part of transformative moments—weddings, graduations, and new beginnings. These experiences remind me why I chose this path in the first place: to make people feel beautiful and confident.
In conclusion, my journey in the service industry, particularly in the salon world, has been marked by struggles that have tested my resilience and determination. Yet, with each challenge, I have emerged stronger and more equipped to navigate the complexities of this vibrant field. The key takeaway? Giving
