Today we’d like to introduce you to David Mills
Hi David, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Absolutely. I grew up in Maryland, where my passion for art began. While I took formal courses at the Corcoran School of Art in Washington, D.C., and the University of Maryland, much of my artistic education has been self-driven. Over the years, I’ve studied design, color theory, abstraction, and various art movements and techniques in my own time, maintaining a hands-on approach to both creativity and learning.
Though I’ve always been fascinated by sculpture, it wasn’t until I moved to Austin that I was encouraged to introduce three-dimensionality into my work. Meeting local sculptors here inspired me to expand my practice beyond two-dimensional forms.
In parallel, my curiosity about life’s deeper questions—our purpose and existence—led me to explore quantum physics and mathematics, particularly the principles of divine order and harmonic frequencies. This exploration has profoundly shaped my work and marked a spiritual awakening for me. Today, my art is not just about aesthetics but about harmonizing science, spirituality, and creativity.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Not at all—it’s been a road full of twists and turns, with plenty of learning along the way. One of the biggest challenges I’ve faced is navigating the sheer volume of ideas that pass through my mind. As an artist, the creative flow can feel overwhelming at times, and learning to identify the ideas worth pursuing—those that truly resonate with my vision and values—has been a significant part of my journey. It’s about trusting my instincts and letting go of concepts that don’t serve the bigger picture of my work.
Another challenge has been finding a place in the market for my art that allows me the time and resources to stay focussed on creating artworks. Making a living as an artist requires perseverance and adaptability, but it’s incredibly fulfilling when I can sustain my work while staying true to my vision.
On top of that, being a dedicated father and husband is central to who I am, but it requires constant attention and effort. Balancing my time and energy between family and creative pursuits is an ongoing challenge, but it’s also one of the most rewarding parts of my life. My family inspires me and grounds me, and their support is what makes it all possible.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about David Mills Studio?
I am a professional artist exploring human existence and consciousness through my work. Inspired by the desire to understand our place in time and space, my art responds to the fragmentation of modern life—marked by conflict, greed, and the erosion of core values. As science and spirituality converge, I seek to find harmony amidst the chaos.
Rooted in simplicity and craftsmanship, my work emphasizes the tactile and elemental. I specialize in the intersection of harmonic frequencies, mathematics, and human experience, using these principles to craft art that is both visually striking and emotionally evocative.
What sets my work apart is its foundation in the science of vibrations and resonance. My intent is for viewers to feel my art—not just see it—experiencing a direct impact on their own sense of self. By aligning art with physics, psychology, and harmonic principles, I create intuitive yet scientifically grounded experiences.
I primarily work in series, allowing for deep exploration of specific themes, and I welcome commissions that align with these ideas. Ultimately, my art is an invitation to reflect, connect, and resonate with something deeper within ourselves and the world.
We love surprises, fun facts and unexpected stories. Is there something you can share that might surprise us?
Something surprising about me and my work is that I don’t just create art—I tune it, much like a musical instrument. Each piece begins with a chosen frequency, often based on the 432Hz tuning system, and its dimensions and proportions are meticulously calculated to embody that frequency physically. While most people see my work as minimalist and contemporary, what they may not realize is that it’s designed to be felt on a vibrational level. In a way, my sculptures and collages are silent compositions—resonating with the body and mind, even if the viewer isn’t consciously aware of it.
