Today we’d like to introduce you to Divine Canines
Hi Divine Canines, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
Divine Canines was founded in 2004 by a small group of dog lovers who wanted to share their dogs’ magic with people in need. We have grown from that group into an organization with more than 175 currently active and certified dog-and-handler teams, providing free therapy dog visits for tens of thousands of Texans in need.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Other than the usual growing pains of a non-profit organization, our road has been smooth. We have managed to keep our training affordable for all who are interested, regardless of financial situation, and to keep our visits free of charge.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
Divine Canines provides free therapy dog visits for tens of thousands of Central Texans in need. We visit school reading programs, rehabilitation centers, hospitals, senior living facilities, programs for individuals with developmental disabilities, and any other places where people are in need. We define ‘in need’ quite broadly, for instance going to local colleges and universities to provide study breaks.
Unlike many therapy dog organizations, we do not discriminate against any age or breed of dog. We are proud to include many breeds that some organizations will not include, because we believe that any non-aggressive dog has great potential.
Our visits are always free. We are serving people in need, and do not want to add to their stress by charging for our services.
We have kept our training costs affordable and our visits free thanks to many generous donors and our annual Barks for Beers event. We partner with up to 30 Central Texas craft breweries for this month-long event. Patrons purchase a Pawsport and a Divine Canines souvenir glass, with proceeds going to Divine Canines. The Pawsport entitles the patron to one pour at each brewery at any time during the month.
So maybe we end on discussing what matters most to you and why?
Helping people feel better, relieving stress, sharing the love of our dogs.
