Community Highlights: Meet Ellee’ Bartholomew of SlayedByLA

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ellee’ Bartholomew

Ellee’, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
As a young girl, I watched my stepmother do hair on everyone in the neighborhood. From mimicking her movements on Bratz dolls to practicing on my siblings, curiosity formed into talent. Eventually, throughout high school and college, I simply did my own hair. I had no intention of establishing a business or identifying as a professional hairstylist. But I was constantly questioned, “Who did your hair?” by my track teammates during COVID and my first semester at Howard. Initially doing hair for a few teammates, it eventually expanded to include the football team, my friends, and Howard’s student population as everyone returned to campus. Additionally, I was able to take on more clients after I hurt my knee in track, and they urged me to launch a website and a real business because my skills were deserving. I had no idea that taking myself seriously could lead to so many opportunities in my life and business.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It definitely has not been a smooth road, but what is? Starting a business as a broke college student was already hard alone, until my business began paying for itself + my bills. However, one of the hardest struggles I experienced with my business was relocating from my steady, loyal clientele in DC to my hometown in Austin having to start completely over. Strangers tend to love and support you before people you’ve known all your life, no matter how talented you are. I’ve learned to just keep the faith and stay in the lane God has for me while supporting those who support me.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about SlayedByLA?
I’m currently an at-home stylist based in Round Rock, specializing in stitch and knotless braids, as well as locs. Servicing males and females, I would say I’m known for my parts and clean work. I take my time to ensure every line is crisp. I am most proud of having a brand that’s dedicated to God while providing my clients with the most peaceful and enjoyable experience. Between currently getting my second degree, my job, opening a second business, and taking clients as a hairstylist, bookings are going fast! I will do my best to service a great quantity of clients while never sacrificing quality, but spots are limited, so book now, ladies and gentlemen.

How do you define success?
Success is having peace of mind with where you are currently while also striving to grow into the version of yourself God intended for you to be. It’s accepting the process of falling down and getting back up with new knowledge to make better decisions this time. Success is waking up everyday grateful because you just know God has so much in store for you while already living in an answered prayer! It’s way more about fulfillment rather than the highest level of material things society tells you to gain.
