Today we’d like to introduce you to Emma Clark.
Hi Emma, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
The Elgin Farmers’ Market has proudly served the community for 40 years, growing from a small number of local growers into a vibrant, year-round weekly market in downtown Elgin. Our mission is to create a welcoming space where farmers, ranchers, bakers, and artisans can connect directly with their neighbors and to keep local food at the heart of our community.
As Elgin has grown, so has the market. Today, we’re more than a place to shop, we’re a community gathering space featuring live local musicians, food-focused family events, cooking demonstrations with take-home recipe cards, and seasonal celebrations that bring people together.
The market is run by a dedicated volunteer board committed to supporting small producers, strengthening the local economy, and ensuring the market remains sustainable for years to come.
Food access is central to our work. We proudly accept SNAP and participate in the Double Up Food Bucks program, which matches SNAP dollars giving customers extra for fresh, local fruits and vegetables. By helping families stretch their food budgets while supporting local farmers, these programs strengthen both household food security and our local food system.
At its core, the Elgin Farmers’ Market is about connection, to our food, to our farmers, and to one another. We’re committed to keeping that spirit alive each and every week.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It hasn’t always been a smooth road. Like many community organizations, we’ve faced our share of challenges over the years.
The COVID-19 pandemic was one of the most significant. We had to quickly adapt to changing safety guidelines while ensuring our vendors could continue selling and our community could continue accessing fresh food. It required flexibility, clear communication, and a lot of teamwork from our vendors, volunteers, and shoppers.
Operating an outdoor market in Central Texas also means navigating extreme weather, from intense summer heat to unexpected freezes and storms. Weather impacts vendors, attendance, and logistics, and requires constant adaptability.
Extreme weather impacts our producers in particular. The recent freeze in Texas prompted us to share a PSA letting customers know their vendors were harvesting as much as possible before the cold arrived. They really showed up, leading to one of the most successful markets for the time of year.
Another important milestone was implementing SNAP benefits at the market. The process was longer and more complex than many people realize, involving administrative hurdles, compliance requirements, and ongoing management systems. However, expanding food access was too important not to pursue, and we’re proud to now offer both SNAP and Double Up Food Bucks to better serve our community.
Each challenge has ultimately strengthened the market. They’ve pushed us to be more resilient, more organized, and even more committed to our mission of supporting local producers and improving food access in Elgin.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
The Elgin Farmers’ Market is a year-round, producer/maker only market. This means the people selling at our market are the ones who grow, raise, bake, or create what they bring each week. Our vendors provide fresh, locally grown produce, pasture-raised meats and eggs, baked goods, prepared foods, handmade products, and seasonal offerings that truly reflect Central Texas. The direct connection between producer/maker and shopper is at the heart of what we do.
What sets us apart is our focus on authenticity, accessibility, and community. We’re not just a place to shop, we’re a weekly gathering space. You’ll find live local musicians, family-friendly food events, cooking demonstrations with take-home recipe cards, and seasonal celebrations woven into the market experience. We’re intentional about creating an atmosphere that feels welcoming, relaxed, and rooted in Elgin.
We’re especially proud of our commitment to food access. By accepting SNAP benefits and participating in Double Up Food Bucks, we help ensure that fresh, local food is accessible to more families while directly supporting small farmers. As a volunteer-led nonprofit organization, every decision we make centers on strengthening our local food system and keeping the market sustainable for the long term.
More than anything, we want readers to know that the Elgin Farmers’ Market is built on relationships, between growers/makers and customers, between neighbors, and between generations. When you shop at our market, you’re not just making a purchase; you’re investing in local farms, local families, and the future of our community.
What are your plans for the future?
Looking ahead, our focus is on deepening our impact within the community while ensuring the long-term sustainability of the market itself. A major priority is increasing SNAP participation and awareness so more families know they can use their benefits at the market and take advantage of Double Up Food Bucks. We want fresh, local food to be a realistic and accessible option for more households in Elgin, not a luxury.
We’re also working to expand our reach through stronger partnerships with local schools and community organizations. By collaborating on educational initiatives, farm-to-table awareness, and youth engagement, we hope to help the next generation better understand where their food comes from and why supporting local producers matters.
Vendor growth is another key part of our future. We’re committed to recruiting and supporting new farmers and food producers, helping small businesses thrive, and ensuring the market remains financially sustainable for both vendors and the organization.
We’re also excited to grow our event programming. From more cooking demonstrations and seasonal celebrations to interactive, family-friendly experiences, we’re planning to make each market day feel even more dynamic and welcoming.
As we look to the future, our goal isn’t just growth for growth’s sake, it’s thoughtful expansion that strengthens our vendors, increases food access, and keeps the market a vibrant gathering place for the entire community.
