Today we’d like to introduce you to Gui Campos
Hi Gui, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
My journey in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu started over 20 years ago in Porto Alegre, Brazil, where I grew up. I co-founded the ‘Guetho Jiu-Jitsu’ academy with my brother Gustavo Campos. Over the years, I’ve had the privilege of teaching and competing at the highest levels, and I’ve been fortunate to help mentor multiple world champions across all belt levels. My passion for the art and my dedication to teaching earned me a reputation as a skilled coach and instructor.
I’ve always had a dream of raising my family in the U.S. because of the opportunities and the culture, and in 2016, I decided to pursue that dream. I moved with my spouse and twin daughters to Austin, Texas, to continue my journey and build my legacy here. I chose the Bee Cave area not only for the strong sense of community and collaboration but also because it’s a place where my family and I truly feel at home. My daughters love their school, and the community has welcomed us with open arms.
I feel incredibly fortunate to do what I love every day—teaching Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and making a positive impact on my students’ lives. Jiu-Jitsu isn’t just about the sport; it’s about life lessons like discipline, resilience, and perseverance, which help people grow both on and off the mat. Along the way, I’ve had the honor of winning several tournament titles, including the 2020 IBJJF World Champion title at black belt, but what I value most is seeing my students grow and succeed. I’m proud of the community we’ve built here, and I’m excited to continue contributing to it.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Like any journey, it hasn’t always been a smooth road, especially in the beginning. Starting a business and settling in a new country always comes with its share of challenges. But one thing I’ve learned through Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is that challenges are an opportunity to grow. The best part is that in Jiu-Jitsu, we don’t just have customers—we have friends, family, and a community. This support system has been invaluable in helping me overcome obstacles. From building relationships with my students to getting advice from fellow instructors, the people around me have been a constant source of strength. It’s the sense of community and collaboration that has really helped us navigate the tougher times and turn challenges into opportunities. Together, we’ve built something truly special, and I’m grateful for every step of the way.
As you know, we’re big fans of Atos Austin Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
At Atos Austin Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, we offer world-class Jiu-Jitsu classes for men, women, and children starting as young as three years old. Located in the Bee Cave and Westlake area, our academy provides a welcoming environment where students can grow physically, mentally, and emotionally. We are proud of our well-qualified team, which includes top-tier instructors that I’ve known and trusted for years. Many of them are from Brazil, and we’re honored to help them fulfill their own American dream by bringing them here to teach at Atos Austin.
Our academy is known for its high-level instruction, dedication to student success, and commitment to building a positive, collaborative community. Whether you are a beginner or an experienced practitioner, our classes cater to all skill levels. We focus not only on mastering Jiu-Jitsu techniques but also on fostering discipline, resilience, and self-confidence in our students. Additionally, we offer self-defense classes, empowering individuals with the skills to protect themselves and navigate challenging situations safely.
What sets us apart is our methodology and the way we approach training. We don’t just teach Jiu-Jitsu; we build a supportive, family-like atmosphere where people feel encouraged to push themselves and achieve their personal goals. We are excited about our growth—currently, we’re opening a new location in North Austin, and we plan to announce another location soon. Our goal is to share our expertise and methodology across the city, helping even more people improve their lives through Jiu-Jitsu and self-defense.
We are incredibly proud of the community we’ve built and the impact we’ve had on so many lives. At Atos Austin, we’re not just changing people’s fitness or skill level; we’re helping them achieve their dreams, and that’s what drives our business.
Do you have recommendations for books, apps, blogs, etc?
Yes, there are definitely a few resources that align with the principles of Jiu-Jitsu and help me do my best in life, both at work and personally.
In terms of books, “The Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Globetrotter” by Christian Graugart stands out. It offers a unique perspective on the global Jiu-Jitsu community and emphasizes the importance of continuous learning and adapting, which is a principle I carry with me in everything I do.
For improving my techniques, I also love using Atos On Demand. It’s an amazing resource to watch high-level instruction and drilling from the best in the world. It allows me to refine my technique and stay up to date with new moves, helping me continue to improve my game. It’s a great way to learn at my own pace and always stay connected to the evolving techniques of the sport.
Lastly, the blogs and social media accounts of high-level athletes and coaches, like those from BJJ Fanatics and Atos Jiu-Jitsu, keep me connected to the latest techniques, strategies, and motivational stories. They remind me that learning never stops, and there’s always room for growth—whether it’s on the mat or in other areas of life!
