Community Highlights: Meet Hatim Sabri of AFUS Beauty

Today we’d like to introduce you to Hatim Sabri.

Hatim, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
My journey began when I decided to leave my country and travel the world. The search of who I am and what I really wanted in life. Coming from a Native North African Family. I always felt like the piece that doesn’t belong in the puzzle. I wanted to be different and do different. Moving to America led me to work in so many different industries. Mostly sales. And this is how I got introduced to the skincare industry. Starting to work as a salesman for a luxury brand, then as a distributor.

Ten years forward, I developed a great understanding to the skincare world. But also a great relationship with my customers. I love my customers and I care about them a lot. I always advise them the best I can. But sometimes making a sale and giving the best advice don’t go along the way.

I wanted my business to do well but I also wanted my customers to have the best products. Unfortunately, it wasn’t always the case. People trusted the brand but my expertise shows that most products are not what they claim to be.

So I decided to create a product good for everyone. A product that no matter what type of skin you have or skin tone you are. This product will be good for you. A super effective product and most importantly an honest product. But how can I do that. It seems almost like I am searching for a miraculous ingredient.

At that time, the world’s skincare industry discovered a miraculous oil called Argan Oil. Extracted out of a seed from a tree that grows only in Morocco. Precisely in the Atlas Mountains. Here I am across the ocean from my land and my people. My search of who I am and what my future gonna be led me back to my roots.

I always knew what my grandma or my mother told me about Argan and its benefits. Argan is our heritage. Our ancestors used it for thousands of years. And for the first time ever all the benefits claimed are now backed by science.

That’s it. I got it. Now I know who I am and what’s my mission. I can say that I’m a proud representative to the “Amazigh Culture” Or “The Native North African Culture.”

Using and Sharing this sacred ingredient that my ancestors used thousands of years ago is such an honor and humbling feeling. But also a great responsibility.

It took me little more than three years of research. I wanted to give back to my community so I’m only working with local farms and a laboratory led by Native women. Everything is made in Morocco by hand. In the village of my grandparents. I chose the name “AFUS” that means hand in my native language. A symbol that represents the origin of the product also hand made by my people. I feel so lucky and humbled to be able to represent my culture by helping people. I am also proud to bring such a product to my customers here in the U.S and for the first time feeling that growing my business and helping my customers go along the way.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
The only way you learn is by making mistakes. And god knows I made so many and lost so much. But because I love and I believe in what I do. I always find the drive to keep moving forward. Learning about Finances and delegating parts of the business to other people and trusting their expertise have been the hardest to learn for me. The pandemic made the business very difficult and sometimes impossible. Once again, I had to make the decision of closing my location and switching all my business online. Adaptability is a skill that I’m learning. On the bright side, moving to Austin is one of the best decisions I’ve made for my business and family. Austin is a very welcoming city. We just love the culture and the people over here.

What do you like and dislike about the city?
Austin is such a diverse city. People are very warm and welcoming. But also business-minded. Since I moved to Austin, I met so many entrepreneurs and artists. People are so creative over here. I’m also a fan of the culture. There is so many things to do and places to visit. It is hard to be bored here.
