In 2020, my life took an unexpected turn. I contracted COVID-19 and nearly lost my life. I was in the ICU for 10 days, and if it weren’t for my wife, I might not be here today. During my recovery, I spent a lot of time reflecting on my future. I wanted to build something of my own—something that would thrive once the world reopened.
Toward the end of 2020, I decided to invest in a photo booth. However, I didn’t receive my first booth until April 2021. During those four months, I dedicated myself to learning everything I could about digital marketing—Facebook ads, Google SEO, and online advertising. By the time my equipment arrived, I had already secured several thousand dollars in bookings. That’s when I made the leap, quit my job, and went all in.
Fast forward to today, and we’re in our fifth year of business. Flash Party Photo Booth has become one of the top photo and video companies in the Austin market, with over 214 five-star reviews. We specialize in all types of events, from quinceañeras and weddings to high-end corporate activations. What started as a vision during my hospital stay has grown into a thriving business, and I couldn’t be more grateful for the journey.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Starting a new business is never a smooth road. It’s full of challenges, setbacks, and moments of doubt. In the beginning, I faced obstacles like learning how to market my services, managing finances, and building a brand from the ground up. There were times when bookings were slow, and I questioned if I had made the right decision. However, I knew success wouldn’t come overnight, so I committed to continuous learning, refining my strategies, and adapting to industry trends. Seeking mentorship and surrounding myself with experienced entrepreneurs helped me avoid many common pitfalls. The key is persistence. Pushing through the tough times and staying focused on long-term growth. Every struggle became a lesson that shaped my business into what it is today.

Can you talk to us about how you think about risk?
Taking risks is an essential part of entrepreneurship, and one of the biggest risks I ever took was leaving my six-figure corporate job to start my own business. I had everything most people work toward after graduating college—a company car, a cell phone, a car allowance, bonuses, and all the perks of a stable career. Walking away from that security, especially during COVID, was a leap of faith. I was starting from scratch with no guarantee of success, only a vision and the drive to make it happen.
There were moments of doubt, especially in the early days, when I questioned if I had made the right decision. But I knew that if I wanted true freedom and the ability to build something for myself, I had to take the risk. I invested in education, marketing, and networking to ensure my business thrived. Now, five years later, Flash Party Photo Booth has become one of the top photo and video companies in Austin, working with major brands and delivering unforgettable experiences. The risk was great, but the reward has been even greater.
