Community Highlights: Meet Jenna Gallagher of Sunflower Dog Care

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jenna Gallagher

Hi Jenna, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I worked in a few different fields before working professionally with dogs. The common thread to all of my jobs has been giving back to my community – I have an enormous heart. I started as a K-2 special education teacher, then a case manager for people recently released from prison/jail. Then I realized that I was giving SO much to the people most in need, that I had nothing left for myself.

I am grateful to have found a way to give back to my community through working with (mostly rescue behavior) dogs, that is also good for my health and life. As far as the dog world, I have had many different jobs, at several different businesses with differing philosophies – which has allowed me to learn a ton and develop my own unique approach to dogs that I have seen be effective and safe.

I have been caring for dogs in my home since I was 12 years old! Foster/Rover for 10 years. I am proud to share that I have been in business on my own for 2 years! It has been the best decision that I have ever made in my life! Thank you to all of my customers who become friends and fiercely support Sunflower Dog Care.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
My masters degree is in special education, what do I know about running a business? I knew that I was in over my head and had to hire experts to get me started laying a solid foundation. CPAs, lawyers, insurance agents are black-and-white, which as a math-minded person I understand well.
Marketing has been my greatest struggle. I provide a unique service that is hard to find and greatly needed in Austin. I know there are people out there looking for what I offer, and I am always trying new techniques to reach a larger audience.
For now, I have busy and slow seasons. I am hoping through marketing I can gain more clients to stay busy year round.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Sunflower Dog Care?
I am so proud to be one of Austin’s only “unicorn home” dog boarders. This means that I have no pets, kids, or visitors – ensuring that my home is safe and relaxing for any behavior, medical, special needs, or pampered dog. I have a large privacy fenced backyard and only accept one family at a time. I have a decade of experience working with severe behavior dogs, using a warm relationship-building approach. Through body language, treats, and patience, I will very likely become your dog’s best friend and second home.
Several months ago, wonderful Clair (she/they) grew Sunflower Dog Care team to two members. She provides housesitting in the Austin metro, and Central/North walks and drop in-visits. Behind the scenes, she is the Operations Manager working on onboarding, scheduling, and various projects.
We offer dog home boarding, dog/cat housesitting, walks, drop-in visits, training, and more! We treat your pets like our own. We provide experienced compassionate care tailored to your pets individual needs. We are insured and bonded with pet first aid/cpr certification.

Networking and finding a mentor can have such a positive impact on one’s life and career. Any advice?
For networking, I recommend taking a class or joining a group related to small businesses or your field (which in my case is dogs). Connect with like-minded people on social media and make coffee plans. Reach out to a former co-worker that you learned a lot from and want to stay connected with. People collaborating and supporting each other is the solution to everything.
