Community Highlights: Meet Jermaine & Jahmaal Dumes of Down South CaJJun Eats

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jermaine & Jahmaal Dumes.

Hi Jermaine & Jahmaal , thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
In 2017 during our last semester of college we started selling boiled crawfish on campus. We both graduated May of 2017 and started working in corporate Tech sales. On the weekends we would sell food from our home or do pop up events and catering at different venues. During Covid in May of 2020 I was laid off and while selling over 100 plates a day from our home we found an outdoor venue that quickly turned into a whole outdoor dining experience but was originally supposed to be pre order pick up. Moving with the crowd and clientele we hosted numerous amounts of events that gave people something to do while being able to enjoy great food during Covid. In 2023 we moved into our brick & mortar and We’ve now been in our brick and mortars for 2.5 years now and will make a total of 6 years since opening July 10th of 2020.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Of course not. The restaurant industry is one of the hardest. With no prior restaurant experience we’ve had to learn everything as we go. Cooking, serving, & entertaining came naturally but the business side it’s what is the most important. Moving from outside into a brick & mortar was a 13 month process that initially we thought would only take 3 months. Being closed for 13 months was very hard but we pushed through. There are different struggles daily in the restaurant industry but staffing, labor cost, food costs, money management (capital), has probably been some of our main struggles.

Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Down South CaJJun Eats?
