Today we’d like to introduce you to Jessica Cutillas.
Jessica, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
Hi my name is DJ JESSKA but my real name is Jessica Cutillas, Texas Native, founder and DJ of Eclectic Beats DJ Services. I started Eclectic Beats in 2022 to bring my passion for music, sound, and lighting to events all over Austin, Texas.
I’ve been DJing for over 13 years, but my love for music goes way back. I grew up in Lubbock, Texas, living with my grandparents, and as an only child, I found comfort and escape in music. I was a shy Asian girl who didn’t always fit in, but music was my outlet. I was always looking for new songs, making mixes for friends, and creating cheer mixes for my high school team. Karaoke with my family was our thing, especially around Christmas, my grandmother would cook a feast and we would all sing along to Michael Jackson. Music has always been there for me.
In eighth grade, I came to Austin for a women’s engineering camp at the University of Texas, and that trip changed everything. Don’t get me wrong, Lubbock had its charm, but I was ready for something bigger. I fell in love with the city and knew I wanted to be here. I moved to Austin to attend the University of Texas. Hook ‘em Horns! I was surrounded by live music on 6th street, creativity in the park, and opportunity to spin records with friends. It was exactly where I was meant to be.
When I started DJing I didn’t see many women doing it. I wanted to change that and stand out. Who doesn’t love the DJ! Haha. When I perform and I meet young people that light up with curiosity, I love it when they ask questions and want to know how it all works. It warms my heart that if I can inspire them to believe they can do anything, discover music, dance, perform, then I’ve done my job.
When I’m DJing, I feel completely at home. I love reading the crowd, mixing genres, and finding those perfect songs that get people on their feet. I don’t have biases when it comes to music. If it has a good beat, a message that connects, or makes someone tap their foot, it’s worth playing. My ultimate goal is simple: to spread good vibes and love through music.
Austin has been a huge part of my story. The city’s diversity, energy, and creative spirit have shaped who I am as a DJ and as a young Asian female business owner. Fall is my favorite season in Austin because of how the leaves change all over Lady Bird Lake and the Greenbelt. Halloween is my favorite holiday to kick off the season. I have been blessed to play amazing Halloween parties, weddings, Christmas and Holiday events. There’s something special about seeing people dance and celebrate together and it reminds me why I started doing this in the first place.
I’m excited and proud to continue growing my business Eclectic Beats and expand my DJ Services all over Central Texas.. I recently brought on an incredible MC who knows how to work a crowd, and I’m looking forward to expanding the team. My goal is to be part of the next big, fun, memorable event, to keep the party going and make every dance floor I touch unforgettable. Because at the end of the day, I’m not just playing music, I’m creating moments…and that’s what keeps me going every single time I press play.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Sure the journey hasn’t been easy, but it has been incredibly rewarding! One of the biggest challenges for me, is how to talk about myself and what I do. I’ve always loved music, but self-promotion didn’t come naturally. You would think being a DJ it would. Over time, I learned that consistency, persistence, and community make a huge difference. I started putting myself out there, sharing my story, showing up, and letting my work speak for itself. The support from my family and friends has meant everything.
As you know, we’re big fans of Eclectic Beats DJ Services. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
I’ve been in Austin for over 20 years, and I’m so proud of what Eclectic Beats has become. I play several gigs a month from corporate events to weddings to festivals, and I’ve had the honor of performing at some amazing events like ACL Festival’s Quiet Events Silent Disco, NYE Silent Disco, the MLS Soccer Meet & Greet, UT Football Tailgates and the DSACT Buddy Walk. I’ve worked with incredible clients and venues including H-E-B, Kalahari, Higginbotham, Quay, Church’s Chicken and many locally owned businesses.
Are there any books, apps, podcasts or blogs that help you do your best?
I’m a big believer in using the resources that are already at our fingertips, and for me, YouTube has been one of the most valuable. It’s an incredible place to explore new ideas, learn new skills, and dive deeper into any passion you want to grow. Whether it’s DJ techniques, music discovery, small business advice, or even mindset and personal development, there’s a creator or channel for every stage of the journey.
I love that I can watch real people share their experiences, mistakes, and tips in a way that feels authentic and accessible. It’s like having a library, a mentor, and a creative studio all in one. YouTube has helped me elevate both my DJ craft and my business, and it continues to inspire me to raise the bar in everything I do.
