Community Highlights: Meet Jim Markunas of The Austin Consulting Group

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jim Markunas.

Hi Jim, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I started managing tech projects for large internet television brands, like DIRECTV, in my late 20’s. From there, I went into eCommerce development for American Apparel, and then briefly worked with the Boston Consulting Group on a large project. I found that I had a knack for finding money for the companies I was working for and using project management to increase profitability. Recently, I started an Austin-based management consulting company with a few friends with the goal of increasing profitability for eCommerce and retail businesses.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back, would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Any worth road traveling has bumps on the journey—the high tech world, especially. I’ve been fortunate to help big brands and up-and-comers build their empires, and there’s a sense of adventure that comes with that. As far as struggles, sometimes it’s hard to herd all the cats and build consensus when there are conflicting political and corporate agendas. But, that’s where I have a special set of skills. I can get a cruise ship to drive like a race car if I have the right project and team behind me.

As you know, we’re big fans of The Austin Consulting Group. For our readers who might not be as familiar, what can you tell them about the brand?
The Austin Consulting Group is a collective of seasoned eCommerce, project management, retail, and operations professionals that are on the cutting edge of the latest industry trends. Our talent pool has worked with some of the world’s top companies: DIRECTV, Disney, American Apparel, BigCommerce, Shopify, and Adobe. Is it time to grow your business? We can help with our three-phase strategy to grow your revenue, streamline your business, and increase your bottom line. No project is too big or too small, and our team of experts can be scaled to meet anyone’s specific needs.

How do you think about happiness?
I was writing songs. I love the feeling of hearing a distorted/thumping guitar riff up against a wall of drums and bass. As much as I love my day job, I’d like quite it in a heartbeat to produce up-and-coming bands.
