Today we’d like to introduce you to John Sullivan.
Thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, how did you get started?
I was raised in the small town of Florence, just outside Georgetown. I joined the military right out of high school and served in the Army for 8 years. During those years, I married my wife, Cassandra; we have been married for 12 years and have 4 kids together. Our children are a wild bunch and are my greatest blessings. With having a big family comes the “do it yourself” mentality, just to try and save money where we could. I’ve always had a passion for woodworking and never had the space or the overpriced saw that would only be used a handful of times a year. I thought I couldn’t be the only person feeling this way, so I popped the intrusive thought of creating a maker space for the community of Georgetown. So now we have Georgetown’s DIY Woodshop, LLC—a place where we can build community by sharing space, tools, and knowledge.
We all face challenges, but would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
No smooth roads, but I wouldn’t have it any other way. My life, along with everyone else’s life, is riddled with potholes and dirt roads. I’m not a grossly educated man, so starting a business from scratch was as easy as climbing Mount Everest as a newborn. My first hurdle was the electricity. It never crossed my mind that it would be such a challenge. You would think it would be as simple as putting a card on file with the address to correspond, but you would be wrong. Other hurdles include marketing, taxes, waivers, classes, tool maintenance, insurance, etc. However, I remain hopeful and ignorantly perseverant for those who use and need the shop.
Thanks for sharing that. So, you could tell us a bit more about your business.
The woodshop is a community maker space, which means I provide the tools and space for individuals to use on their projects. I am also available to assist with their DIY project if needed. As a business owner, I am most proud of the shop and its potential to help others in the community who need funds or access to high-quality tools and space to unlock their potential. What sets me apart from other businesses is that life is not just about making money but more about servicing the community through your talents and strengths. I want readers to know that you can be someone other than an expert in using the shop. It is designed for the novice and professional-level woodworker.
Alright, so to wrap up, is there anything else you’d like to share with us?
Anything is possible; anyone can build a high-quality heirloom.
