Today we’d like to introduce you to Juan Jose Ruelas.
Hi Juan Jose, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Ever since I was a kid, I dreamed of becoming a film director. I didn’t have the gear or a fancy setup—just a passion for storytelling. My cousin Larry was already making home videos, and it lit a fire in me. I told my family, “If you give me a camera, I’ll show you what I can do.”
In 2018, I had a moment where I knew I needed to start something meaningful. I found a model, shot on my iPhone X, and that same day, Jay Visuals was born. I started getting booked—yes, even with just a phone. Eventually, my dad and brother saw the potential and got me my first real camera.
Later that year, a house fire changed everything. We lost almost everything… except my camera and laptop. That felt like a sign. From then on, I knew this path was meant for me.
Now, Jay Visuals LLC is a full-fledged media production company serving clients across Texas. From working with universities to capturing weddings and producing brand content, I’ve grown the business by building real relationships—not just transactions. I don’t see clients as customers. I see them as people I get to serve and connect with.
And honestly? I’m just grateful. To be doing what I love, creating every day, and seeing the joy people feel when they see their stories captured—that’s everything.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road—but I think that’s what shaped me. One of the biggest challenges early on was not having the gear or experience most photographers had. I was showing up to shoots with an iPhone and a selfie stick, nervous but driven. Luckily, people saw my passion before my equipment.
Then in November 2018, my house burned down. My family lost everything… but somehow, my camera and laptop made it through the fire. That was a moment of clarity. It felt like a sign that this path—media, storytelling, creating—wasn’t just a dream, it was my calling.
Since then, I’ve faced the usual ups and downs of running a business: learning to price my work, navigating slow seasons, and figuring out how to market myself while still staying creative. But every challenge pushed me to grow not just as an artist, but as a person.
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Jay Visuals Media Production?
My business is called Jay Visuals Media Production. We specialize in photography, videography, and storytelling across Texas—covering everything from branding and commercials to events, portraits, and interviews.
What sets us apart is the experience. I don’t just show up with a camera—I bring energy, intention, and a personal connection to every project. My goal isn’t just to deliver quality media, it’s to make people feel comfortable, seen, and proud of their story. That’s why clients keep coming back. I don’t see them as just customers—I see them as collaborators and friends.
Brand-wise, I’m proud that Jay Visuals has become known for professionalism with heart. We’re a trusted name for universities, non-profits, and small businesses who want real moments captured with intention and quality. Whether I’m filming a CEO or a first-generation graduate, I show up with the same level of passion.
At the end of the day, I want readers to know that Jay Visuals is here to tell your story the right way—with care, creativity, and high-quality visuals that last.
What would you say have been one of the most important lessons you’ve learned?
The biggest lesson I’ve learned is that consistency beats perfection. In the beginning, I used to wait for the “perfect time,” the “perfect gear,” or the “perfect opportunity”—but that never comes. What really pushed my growth was showing up, even when I didn’t feel ready.
Whether it was showing up to shoots with an iPhone or learning business lessons the hard way, I’ve learned that progress comes from doing the work, staying humble, and being open to growth. Every shoot, every client, every mistake taught me something valuable. And most importantly—treating people with respect and building genuine relationships will always take you further than talent alone.
