Community Highlights: Meet Kenzie Nixon of The Flower Peddler

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kenzie Nixon

Kenzie, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I’ve always enjoyed being creative and a very hands on person. I love making things. When I went to college, I decided to go into nursing school and became a registered nurse. A year into nursing, I felt like I needed a creative outlet. I didn’t know what I wanted to do exactly, but I started daydreaming about owning my own business someday. Around the time of me wanting to find a creative outlet, my husband gifted me a yellow beach cruiser bike for Valentine’s Day. As soon as I saw it, I said “I’m going to put a basket on this and sell flowers out of it!” And that is how The Flower Peddler was created. After a summer of selling on my bike, I discovered an old 1973 mail truck on Craigslist, and knew it was perfect for a by the stem flower truck

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I think any business owner will give the same answer-it’s definitely not a smooth road. Like anything in life, you have your highs and your lows. The biggest struggle was getting the truck ready. There were a lot of mechanical issues to fix, and finding parts for an old postal truck is no easy task. And it comes with the territory of owning a vintage vehicle, sometimes you have surprise issues that need fixing.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about The Flower Peddler?
The flower truck is set up as a build it yourself flower bar. The flowers are by the stem, and you get the option to build your own bouquet! I try to stock the truck with locally grown florals as often as I can. There are times that my assistance is requested to build a bouquet and it’s usually a team effort. And every now and then someone will give me full creative liberty to build any style of bouquet. I love seeing what other people create, but I also love creating for them as well! I especially enjoy working together to make something beautiful in their own style.
I also have dried everlasting bouquets on the truck. I love being able to offer a variety of options to my customers.
On occasion I will also get requests for flower crowns, and that is when I’m most proud of what I create!
I do a lot of events that are open to the public such as vendor/makers markets, but I also offer truck rentals for private events. Each private rental I do makes me so excited and proud that someone loves my business enough to have it as part of their event!
