Today we’d like to introduce you to Mallory Lawson.
Hi Mallory, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Hi, I’m Mallory—a dietitian, former D1 athlete, CrossFit Games competitor, wife, and mom of two. But most importantly, I’m someone who knows what it feels like to lose your health, your identity, and your confidence—and to fight to get it all back.
At 16, a knee surgery went wrong, leading to five more corrective surgeries over the next four years. I worked hard to recover and played Division 1 volleyball, but after two years, I was told it was too risky to continue. Losing the sport I loved triggered disordered eating and a deep identity crisis. I found myself asking, “Who am I without volleyball?”
That question eventually led me to nutrition. I transferred colleges, fell in love with chemistry and the science of food, and realized I wasn’t alone in my struggles with body image and health. I graduated with a degree in dietetics in 2009 and married my husband—a professional baseball player at the time. Though I delayed completing my RD internship due to cost, I began working in sports performance and discovered CrossFit—a community that reignited my passion for movement. I went on to compete at the CrossFit Games in 2015 and 2017 on a team.
My journey hasn’t been a straight line. I’ve been a volleyball coach, earned my master’s degree, become a mom to two amazing boys, and worked on an endocrinology team as a diabetes educator. In 2017, I experienced another major turning point when my mother-in-law passed away after silently battling mental and hormonal health issues. That moment changed everything. I felt called to finish my dietetic training and help others who feel unseen or misunderstood in their health struggles.
That’s how Nutrition Strategies LLC was born.
Today, I help people with chronic health conditions like diabetes, food intolerances, high cholesterol, and hormone imbalances take control of their health through practical, evidence-based nutrition. I also work with athletes and active women—especially those in perimenopause and menopause—who want to feel strong and supported in their bodies again.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I didn’t complete my RD internship after graduating because of the cost. Nine years later, I decided it was finally time to go back and pursue it. But I found out I needed to retake several “recency” courses before I could even apply. I ended up retaking four classes from my bachelor’s degree to meet the eligibility requirements.
I was accepted into my second-choice internship, which turned out to be exactly where I was meant to be. It was a very progressive program, and I truly thrived there.
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?

What has been the most important lesson you’ve learned along your journey?
Nutrition is never one-size-fits-all. Everybody is unique, and personalized approaches make the biggest difference.
Healing takes time—physically and mentally. Progress isn’t always linear, and patience is key.
Food is more than fuel. It’s tied to emotions, culture, identity, and community. Understanding this makes all the difference in coaching.
Continuous learning is essential. The science of nutrition is always evolving, and so must I as a practitioner.
Empathy and listening matter just as much as knowledge. Clients need to feel seen, heard, and supported, not judged or rushed.
Mental health and physical health are deeply connected. Addressing both leads to more sustainable, meaningful results.
Flexibility beats perfection. Helping clients build sustainable habits over rigid rules fosters long-term success.
Collaboration is powerful. Working alongside other health professionals enriches client care.
Self-care for the coach is vital. To show up fully for others, I must prioritize my own well-being.
Purpose fuels perseverance. Remembering why I started keeps me motivated through challenges and setbacks.
