Today we’d like to introduce you to Marika Flatt.
Hi Marika, so excited to have you on the platform. Before we ask about your work life, how can you bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I’ve been in book publicity since I graduated from college in 1997. I worked at another boutique publicity firm in Austin for seven years and then launched into PR by the Book. We have been helping authors Get the word out about their books for over 20 years. We have been a work-from-home company since 2002, way before everyone else had to figure out how to work from home in 2020. We have clients across the United States, several in Canada, and even others in other countries.
It wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Of course, as with any industry, the book industry has changed quite a bit in the last two decades. Here at PR by the Book, we work hard to stay ahead of the curve. We have evolved quite a bit over the last two decades, adding an entire digital department and modifying our offerings based on what authors and publishers need.
Let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
My husband and I run two businesses: PR by the Book and Texas Lifestyle magazine. PR by the Book is a full-service book publicity firm offering traditional, digital, and social media services to authors and publishers to tell the world about their books. Texas Lifestyle magazine is in its 10th year of telling readers everything that makes living great in the Lonestar state. We are a regional lifestyle publication focusing on travel, food, wine and spirits, entertainment, sports, and very interesting Texans.
Are any books, apps, podcasts, or blogs that help you do your best?
We are constantly reading our client’s books, listening to their podcasts and other media outlets that they are featured on. The most helpful resource for us these past few years is Action Coach of Central Texas. We have been part of that business coaching group since the fall of 2021, which has transformed our business.
