Today we’d like to introduce you to Mathew Stubbs.
Hi Mathew, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today.
My name is Mathew Stubbs, and I founded The Hands Services LLC. I started doing construction work when I was 15 years old because the Louisiana hurricane ruined my dad’s home. My dad, his friends, family, my brother, and I helped demolish what was needed and build it back up. I began learning all it took to build a home at that point.
When I was 19, I hopped into the construction industry as a Glazer Helper for Service Glass & Door CO in Lake Charles, LA. I realized when I was 20 that I enjoyed building things on a commercial level. Knowing that I played an important part in the upbringing of properties gave me a sense of accomplishment. Fast forward to me at 27 years old. I ended up working for Just Let Me Do It Commercial Services and was taught how to quote for jobs and do them myself. I left that business to become Target’s Property Management Lead(PML) in Lake Charles. It was an amazing opportunity and allowed me to grow even more with my time management, trade skills, vendor management, team management, safety, and overall multi-tasking abilities. When I saw how much I saved the store by keeping work in-house and doing it all myself, I realized. I could be doing this all for myself and making more by helping people without charging as much as others. The opportunity and need for people like me was massive in Austin, TX. I moved to the Austin area and filed for an LLC for The Hands Services. God told me to come out of this direction, and I had been hired to work for a temp agency at the same time before moving out here. Within 7 weeks of being out in Texas, I could quit the temp agency because work for my business had picked up so much that I didn’t have time to work for anyone other than myself.
People want someone reliable, trustworthy, and hard-working, which will price them fairly. I have been able to do that for everyone I have met so far! I love living in Texas, knowing the impact I have made in each person’s life with the work I do for them, and being able to speak with them and get to know them! The Hands Services serves as “The hand and feet of God.” We do not do what we do to make money simply but to do God’s work and ensure each client is shown love and respect!
We all face challenges, but would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It hasn’t been a smooth road so far, per se, but I will say that it has been easier than I imagined with starting. I’m grateful to have learned everything I know beforehand from past jobs, mentors, and like-minded individuals. One of my struggles was turning down jobs in my first month out here because I couldn’t toe with a Kia Forte. I eventually met someone who took an interest in what I was doing with the business, and he wanted to invest in the business. This allowed me to pay for my marketer and put a down payment on my Ford F-150 Lariat that I now have! Being able to take on any job that comes my way!
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
The Hands Services is a handyman business. We offer our knowledge and skillsets to help clients have their dream projects come true without digging into their pockets for much. We are known for giving high-quality work, excellent communication, being upbeat, and respecting properties. I am most proud that as a handyman, I surprise almost every client with what I can do for them when they mention things they want to be done in the future to their businesses and homes. They then realize I’m there all in one guy for things needing to be done for them. The Hands Services offers military discounts, referral discounts, teacher/police/firefighters discounts, Pug owner discounts(the owner loves pugs), and return customer discounts. Although we do almost anything except HVAC and roofing work(not HVAC certified yet), we specialize in painting/texture/drywall. We have become known for doing close-to-perfect paint work, which we are building off of as a business. Mainly because we enjoy painting😁
