Today we’d like to introduce you to Mayra Angulo.
Hi Mayra, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I grew up in Culiacan, Mexico surrounded by the beauty industry. When I was about 10, my aunt would take me to beauty classes, and I learned about hair extensions, nails, and makeup just by watching. I think that’s when I developed my photographic memory—I could absorb everything by observation. At 17, I started helping my brother in his first salon, and that’s when my passion for cosmetology really deepened.
Even though I explored different fields like finance, computer science, and business administration, I realized my heart was always in beauty. When I moved to Los Cabos with my family, I got back into makeup while helping my mom with her Avon business. Later, after marrying and moving to Austin, Texas, I didn’t speak English at first, but I learned fast so I could enroll in cosmetology school. My prior experience helped me stand out quickly, and I even got to work on events like Project Runway, TV shows, and photo shoots. Eventually, I opened my own shared studio.
About three years ago, I also became a grief recovery specialist, but I felt a calling to help people on a deeper level. So, I started working alongside the Grief Recovery Method Institute, which allowed me to support others through their toughest times.
Life hasn’t always been easy—I’ve gone through fertility treatments, became a mom, went through a divorce, and faced the pandemic—but all of these experiences have shaped me. Through it all, my love for creating beauty and helping people feel confident has kept me going and made me the cosmetologist I am today.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Throughout my life and career, I’ve faced many obstacles. Growing up, I had to learn everything by observation, which meant figuring things out on my own without formal guidance at first. Moving to a new country was a huge challenge—I didn’t speak English, so I had to learn the language quickly just to enroll in cosmetology school.
Balancing my career with personal life brought its own challenges. I went through fertility treatments for two years, became a mom, and then faced a divorce when my child was just 18 months old. The pandemic hit soon after, making it impossible to work as I had before. On top of that, pursuing multiple careers—finance, computer science, administration, and eventually corporate and grief recovery work—meant constantly adapting and proving myself in new environments.
Despite all of this, each challenge taught me resilience, creativity, and the importance of following my passion for helping people and creating beauty.
