Community Highlights: Meet Dr. Meghan Faulkner, DC, DACBSP of Apex Sports Medicine

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dr. Meghan Faulkner, DC, DACBSP.

Hi Dr. Faulkner, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I’ve always been fascinated with the human body, especially in the way that it moves. I knew from an early age that I wanted to work with athletes and that I wanted to be a doctor. While in school working towards my undergraduate degree, I was doing volunteer work and shadowing different physical therapy offices. I was so sure that I was going to go to physical therapy school and become a PT. While I was shadowing in one of these clinics, I had the opportunity to follow a chiropractor for the day. I watched him work with a new patient that came in with obvious pain and with an irritable demeanor. Once that patient came off the table after his treatment, I could see everything about him change. The color in his face, his mood, his posture. I was amazed. I had not ever seen a treatment like that before. I decided then I wanted to go to chiropractic school. I found a school that offered a dual program; a Doctor of Chiropractic and a Masters of Sports Medicine. I graduated in 2015 and moved to Austin, Tx. I am actually from Texas and moved back here to be close to family. After I graduated, I began the arduous process of getting my post-graduate certification as a Sports Medicine Chiropractor (Diplomate of the American Board of Chiropractic Practitioners) and completed this in 2020. I started my own sports medicine clinic, Apex Sports Medicine in Leander, TX in 2016 and have been slowly growing it ever since.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I have definitely had some challenges throughout my journey! When I first started my business, I had partners. Along the way, I realized that we no longer aligned in what we wanted for the business, so we made the very scary decision to part ways. That was very challenging because I was then solely responsible for the health of the company. On the flip side of that, I do think this is why my business has now thrived. Another challenge I have encountered throughout this journey is adding and managing personnel. In school, I was taught to be a doctor. There were no business classes. So a lot of how I currently run my practice has come about by trial and error. Including learning how to hire the right people, creating a culture that employees can buy into and believe in, and inspiring high-quality work ethic.

We’ve been impressed with Apex Sports Medicine, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Apex Sports Medicine was founded on a passion to help people move better. We believe that if people can move better, they will live a better life. This can apply to someone who wants to be able to play with their children pain-free or the elite athlete who wants to become a more efficient mover to improve their sport. Being a sports chiropractor means that I will help these people move better through the use of chiropractic adjustments, Active Release Technique, movement assessments and corrective and rehabilitative exercises. We like to spend time with our patients. Our new patient visit is one hour long and each visit after that is thirty minutes. This means that you will not be sold on a very expensive, lengthy treatment plan where the doctor adjusts you the same way each time you come into the office for a total of 3 minutes. Our goal is to fix pain, gone. We also have a massage therapist and acupuncture that we like to incorporate into our treatment plans as well. The last thing I want people to know is that we want to be your very first stop if you have pain anywhere in your body! Through our detailed evaluations, we are able to determine of your pain is something that we can fix in our office or if not, where to refer you. And our particular style of treatment can help reduce chronic pain, even if you have had it for years.

So, before we go, how can our readers or others connect or collaborate with you? How can they support you?
We love referrals! My practice was built on word of mouth and referrals, so those mean a lot to us. We also love setting up free injury evaluations and teaching mobility clinics at local businesses so we can meet people in our community!
