Community Highlights: Meet Parker Conley and Patrick Nye of Remote Team Films

Today we’d like to introduce you to Parker Conley and Patrick Nye.

Hi Parker and Patrick, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory
We like to say that Remote Team Films was founded over a $5 plate of nachos in a University of Texas dorm room. Humble beginnings! We met freshman year of college and were both parts of a sketch comedy group. A few months into the group, we dubbed ourselves the “Remote Team” since we were always the ones going out and shooting on location. We eventually decided that we wanted to do something a little different and delve more into commercial work, but the name Remote Team Films stuck. Throughout college, we worked with a variety of clients, from campus organizations to real estate agents to local conventions. During that time, we worked hard to hone our skills and discover what we liked doing— and didn’t like doing. By the time graduation rolled around, we were working with real clients who were paying us real money. Because we had already been doing it for a few years, we had a footing in the Austin video production industry and could realistically do it full time. So we did! The opportunities kept coming. Clients got bigger, we got to travel for work, and we began collaborating with international brands. Remote Team Films continued to flourish— up until COVID-19. The global pandemic marked a big shift in the company. A large pillar of Remote Team Films was event work, which dried up overnight. Anything that involved travel disappeared in a matter of days. Even our local clients were canceling video shoots left and right. Because of that, we had to adapt and pivot our business. Many of our clients’ needs didn’t change, so we had to rethink our processes in order to deliver a great product in the midst of limitations and restrictions. This led to us creating the animation division of Remote Team Films, which has allowed us to meet our client’s marketing and video needs with a new medium that didn’t require people gathering. We also had to get creative and develop a COVID-safe remote video production workflow. Though there was so much uncertainty in the beginning, our ability to quickly adapt has led to some great new opportunities. The road has been bumpy, but it has definitely been a tremendous learning experience.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Aside from COVID-19, which has been a huge challenge for so many people, Remote Team Films has encountered several obstacles along the way. One of the largest challenges that we have faced— and continue to face— is simply being young entrepreneurs. Oftentimes we find ourselves in the room (or Zoom) with decision-makers that are hesitant to trust our abilities because we’re younger than other companies out there. Though we have years of professional video production and cinematic storytelling experience under our belts, it can still be challenging for people to see past that fact. When you’re in the room with people two or three times your age, you have to work two or three times harder to prove you belong there. Many of our clients have discovered, however, that our age actually ends up being a huge asset. We speak the digital language really well and know how to connect with younger audiences, which are often their target demographic. We are flexible and not stuck in any “old ways,” which holds other companies back.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
Remote Team Films is more than just another Austin video production company. We combine three things to deliver superior content to our customers: technical production savvy, cinematic storytelling, and marketing know-how. The results are great looking videos that both connect emotionally with audiences and drive results. Videos typically aren’t standalone products— they’re a part of a larger marketing strategy. We want to make content that complements and fits into that larger vision and plan. We have even expanded our services to include content marketing through a partnership with a local content marketing agency.

What quality or characteristic do you feel is most important to your success?
We feel that there have been two main characteristics that have contributed to the success of Remote Team Films. First is our adaptability, which has become even more apparent given the events of the past year. We’ll do what it takes to make our client’s vision a reality, which often requires a creative approach and innovative thinking. Video production is an industry where you have to think on your feet and come up with solutions quickly, so being adaptable is a huge advantage. Like we said earlier, you can’t be too set in your ways! Our flexibility also makes it really easy for clients to communicate and work with us, which leads us to the next characteristic— being collaborative. We believe that the most effective way to make a video or a campaign is through solid collaboration. When we first meet with a potential client, our big question is, “How can we collectively meet your objectives?” We strive to maintain great two-way communication throughout every phase of a project from kick-off to final delivery. We respect our clients and what they’re doing, so our aim is to make the process as easy for them as possible. Collaboration is also crucial within Remote Team Films. One of our biggest goals is for Remote Team Films to be a company everyone wants to work for and work with. We make an effort to surround ourselves with talented people who are good at what they do, and we always want to value their skills and expertise. When we treat everyone well, we all benefit!
