Today we’d like to introduce you to Shanda Scott.
Shanda, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
My story began as a young girl loving to style my dolls hair with dreams of having my own salon one day. I taught myself how to braid and to detangle hair. At age 6, my mother started telling me “your gift is in your hands”. She continued telling me this throughout my life and her words inspired a vision and confidence to pursue my passion professionally. This confidence empowered me to attend Cosmetology school and then to become a Master Hair Stylist/ Barber. After graduating from college and pursuing a military career, I wanted to continue my cosmetology education. My mothers’ words, “your gift is in your hands” continued to ring in my ears. On weekends, I worked in salons to keep my license current and my skills up to date while being in the military.
As a Master Stylist/Barber and Active Duty Soldier, I yearned to deepen my knowledge about healthy hair/scalp and how to combat any disorders. I encountered Veterans and Non-Veterans who were suffering from Hairloss/Alopecia. As a result, I attended hair loss seminars, national and international training classes and trade shows to become a Platform Artist and a Certified Non-Surgical Hair Loss Expert. Traveling throughout military assignments enable me to expand my knowledge in a wide range of hai/scalp disorder and remedies..
Upon retirement from the military, my experience as a Soldier, a Master Stylist/Barber and a Certified Non-Surgical Hair Loss Expert empowered me to open my dream salon, “Gifted Hands Salon and Spa”.
I want to thank God, my family and friends, mentors and clients who trust and believe in my gift that allow me to be a blessing to you and my community.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
The need to provide clients who suffered hair loss was challenging due to the wide range of causes. There is a lot of time, finances and patience for research and development of these disorders. The biggest obstacle is getting insurance companies to allow their customers 100% coverage for the hair units and hair extensions.. many of these procedures include burn patients and cancer patients. It involves building and rebuilding custom units for each individual . One must be creative and patient because many times the client doesn’t know what they want or how to take care of their hair unit until their next visit. The clients deal with PTSD, Depression, Postpartum, and mental illness. This challenge was for me to get Active Duty Soldiers, Veterans and citizens renewed confidence for their suffering at no out of pocket expenses.
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
My passion for finding causes and remedies for hair loss allowed me to take a holistic approach which focus on root causes. They are through diet, stress management, and hair/scalp care using a combination of natural remedies and lifestyle changes for comprehensive wellness. My services are dedicated and tailored to men, women, and children. This led me to create my organic hair growth line of a leave in conditioner, moisturizing butter, and essential oil to promote maximum growth.
Most of all, I love that my salon provides an oasis of peace, an hygienic atmosphere, and a relaxing space designed to make each client feel at home and me enjoying my work.
Is there a quality that you most attribute to your success?
An essential quality is a love for researching, listening, learning and teaching how to care and maintain healthy hair/scalp. Most of all, I believe your personality, knowledge of your skill, and relationship with people is most important so clients can see you invest your time and energy to get solutions in a timely manner. One must be committed, dedicated and letting clients know how much you appreciate their support. I always smile and keep the conversation about my client goals, concerns and their ambitions. The ability to have a diverse clientele is extremely important because it opens doors to learn and use your skills and creativity without limitation.
