Spencer Morgan

Spencer, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
Growing up in South Austin since the 90s, I’ve had a front-row seat to the evolution of my hometown and the vibrant electronic music scene that I pour my heart and soul into. It’s been a journey of self-discovery intertwined with the growth of the city and the music I love. People often have misconceptions about electronic music, picturing it as a hedonistic world of excess and superficiality. But for me, it’s been a sanctuary—a place where I’ve found connection, creativity, and a deeper understanding of myself and others.

My passion for electronic music, particularly trance, blossomed when the genre was at its peak. Originating from Germany, trance music’s ethereal melodies and pulsating rhythms provided an escape unlike anything else. It was this enchanting allure that drew me into the world of DJing. However, as I moved to Lubbock for school, I realized that the DJ scene there was more focused on mainstream hits rather than the soul-stirring sounds of trance that I cherished.

Feeling disconnected from my musical roots, I made a decision to step away from DJing and dive into music production. I wanted to create my own sonic identity and share my passion with others authentically. The journey wasn’t easy—it took me 14 years of exploration and experimentation to truly find my artistic voice as Dettech.

Now, as I release my music to the world, I’m not only finding my sound and alter-ego, but also opportunities to collaborate with artists I’ve long admired. It feels like the beginning of an incredible journey—a yellow brick road leading to new adventures and artistic fulfillment. Through it all, I’ve learned that true growth comes from embracing your passions, staying true to yourself, and nurturing meaningful connections along the way.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Getting into music production from scratch was no easy feat for me. I had zero musical talent initially, so the learning curve was steep. What kept me going through those challenging times was sheer determination and a burning desire to create something meaningful. But before diving in, I had to ask myself: What was my ultimate goal? What did I want my music to achieve?

For me, music was a lifeline during tough times—mentally, physically, and financially. It was my way of coping and finding joy amidst struggles. I wanted to share that gift of happiness through my music, to create something that resonated with others on a deeper level. Every step forward came with its own set of obstacles, but I saw them as opportunities to grow and evolve.

As I navigated through this journey, I began to discover parts of myself I never knew existed. It’s in those moments of understanding that you start to truly find your identity and purpose.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Chubby Bundts?
After years in financial advising and tech sales, I took a leap of faith into a completely different realm—a small bakery called Chubby Bundts, a joint venture with my mom. Our goal is to add a unique twist to traditional kolaches and bundt cakes, something that stands out in the world of baked goods.

My mom has always been my culinary inspiration, especially with her amazing bundt cakes. Our love for kolaches also runs deep, with fond memories of stopping for them in West whenever we visited Dallas. One day, I made a promise to my mom: when I became as skilled at making kolaches as she was at making bundt cakes, we would start our own bakery. Years passed, and that dream blossomed into reality. Now, we’ve been delighting local Austinites for a few months now at chubbybundts.com.

Transitioning from my professional background into the bakery world may seem like a sharp turn, but it’s fueled by the same passion and determination that drives my music. Just as in music, where I aim to evoke emotions and create lasting memories, our bakery strives to bring global techniques and flavors into everyday baked goods. It’s about crafting experiences that leave you craving more, one delicious bite at a time.

What do you like and dislike about the city?
Being an Austinite since the 90s, I’ve witnessed the city’s growth firsthand. It’s easy to pinpoint what I don’t like about Austin now, but there’s still that undeniable Austin magic that lingers. Austin embodies the spirit of Texas—authentically optimistic, vibrant, and with a community spirit that’s hard to find elsewhere. Despite losing some of its original touch, Austin remains a place where weirdness is not just accepted but celebrated.

One of the things I love about Austin is its electronic music scene, which has flourished organically over the years. From iconic spots like the old Kingdom, Concourse Project, and to newer venues, there’s a sense of family among the electronic music scene. These gatherings feel like more than just events; they’re moments and opportunities where strangers become one to build something unique and everlasting in their local scene.

However, Austin is constantly changing, and what we see today may not be what we see tomorrow. It’ll be important for those of us who’ve experienced Austin’s cultural roots to preserve that essence while embracing what the future holds. It’s about finding a balance between nostalgia and progress, ensuring that Austin continues to be a place where diversity, creativity, and community continue to thrive underneath change.
