Today we’d like to introduce you to Virginia Montgomery
Hi Virginia, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I’m an Artist with an exceptionally unique and rare creative career: I’m a professional Graphic Facilitator. With over 10 years of experience in Graphic Facilitation (also know as Visual Note-taking or Graphic Recording), I partner with global non-profits and Fortune 500 companies to create live visual “mind-maps” at public conferences and private workshops that engage audiences and make ideas memorable. In 2012, I began my career as a Graphic Facilitator while working in the New York City agency world. In 2020, I brought my company to Big Bright Visuals to Austin, TX. I’m happy to be a part of Austin’s dynamic creative community.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
While illustrating for my clients, I often scribe upon a large whiteboard in front of audiences of thousands of people who are watching my every move as I draw, so it’s very important to always remain focused and to provide audiences with an awesome visual note-taking experience.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
Big Bright Visuals is boutique Graphic Facilitation company based in Austin, TX. Graphic Facilitation (also called Visual Note-taking or Graphic Recording) is a design-thinking service for business meetings, nonprofit workshops, and big public conferences like TED Talks. Visual Notes are created by a trained Graphic Facilitator, like myself, who uses visual storytelling methodologies to translate complex ideas into memorable take-aways. At workshops and conferences, I work “on-the-fly” in front of live audiences to rapidly synthesize meeting ideas into big, bright, visual murals that makes meeting content memorable. Visual Notes are eye-catching, educational, and engage audiences through the immediacy of visual-learning. Visual Notes create impact! They serve as memory retention tools during information-dense conferences, workshops, and meetings. For example, can’t remember any information from last year’s big keynote? Or, can’t remember any learnings from yesterday’s workshop? Check the Visual Notes!
Is there a quality that you most attribute to your success?
While working in high-stakes public event dynamics, flexibility and on-your-feet thinking are essential qualities needed to be a good Graphic Facilitation artist.
