Conversations with Alison Lowery

Today we’d like to introduce you to Alison Lowery.

Hi Alison, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
It’s an exciting story about how I entered the art world. When I lived in Europe growing up, I had the opportunity to visit various art galleries with my family. I knew one day that I wanted to create something as fun and unique as I saw on gallery walls when I was a little girl. When I was younger, I had difficulty learning and understanding math in school. I was fortunate enough to have a math tutor, who was also a well-known artist in town. If we finished my homework early enough, I would ask her to teach me how to paint. That was the first time I held a paintbrush and felt the texture of paint on my fingers. It was the highlight of my week.

Please talk to us about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned. Has it been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It has been a challenging road. I spent many years practicing my technique. I never took any formal art classes growing up; however, I did take an art history class. It was there that we had to paint something at the end of the semester. My subject matter was always a mix of humor and peculiar subject matter. My teacher jokingly advised me not to go into art as a profession. “Art isn’t for everyone,” he would jokingly tell me.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am a New Orleans artist who specializes in mixed media. I am known for my colorful nudes, human expression, and humorous royal birds. I have collectors and clients all over the country that have made my career in art possible. I am most proud when my collectors send me photos of their pieces hanging up in their homes or if I see them out while walking in the city. My art comes alive at that point in a way even I never could have imagined. What sets me apart from other artists is my technique. It is highly personal and unique. I only use my hands, a knife, and fingernails to paint for most of my work. I like to get intimate with every piece and eliminate the need for brushes. I grow my nails long, which helps me “nail” down the details – pun intended.

We would love to hear about your fond memories from growing up.
My favorite childhood memory is being able to travel the world with my family. I got to experience different cultures, atmospheres, and personalities, which has helped me in adulthood. Being exposed to many kinds of people growing up has helped me acclimate to being a social butterfly in an extroverted society. Despite my online presence and personality when you meet me, I am naturally more introverted.
