Conversations with Amber Bauer

Today we’d like to introduce you to Amber Bauer

Hi Amber, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Photography has been a part of my life for as long as I can remember. As a kid, my best friend and I would set up little photoshoots with our disposable cameras, getting creative with whatever we could find. But as I got older, life took over—I got married, started a family, and put photography on the back burner for a while.

Once my kids came along, I found myself picking up the camera again, capturing their everyday moments. That’s when my passion reignited. I started taking workshops, learning as much as I could, and slowly improving my skills.

In 2014, I took a job managing events a local wedding venue, and that’s when everything fell into place. Seeing weddings from behind the scenes made me realize how much I loved the photography side of things. A local wedding photographer offered to mentor me, and from there, I dove headfirst into the world of wedding photography. It’s fast-paced, emotional, and challenging—but I love every second of it.

Now, I primarily photograph weddings but still enjoy working with families and high school seniors. Over the past 10 years, I’ve grown so much as a photographer, and I truly can’t imagine doing anything else.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Nothing in life is completely smooth, and photography is no exception. For me, the biggest challenge has been balance. Wedding seasons in Central Texas are intense—March through June and September through November are packed with back-to-back weddings, while the summer and winter months slow down significantly.

During the busy season, it can be tough to juggle work and family events. On the flip side, the slower months bring their own challenges—fewer weddings mean less consistent income, which can be stressful. But over the years, I’ve learned to take it season by season. I embrace the busy weekends, knowing that the slower months give me time to rest, recharge, and spend quality time with my family. It’s not always easy, but I’ve found a rhythm that works for me.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I absolutely love getting to know my couples and capturing them in their happy place—with each other. There’s something so special about witnessing the love between two people and turning those emotions into timeless photos.
One thing I hear all the time is, “We’re so awkward in front of the camera!” My goal is to prove them wrong—in the best way! I thrive on making my couples feel comfortable, natural, and even have fun during their session. There’s nothing better than delivering photos where they say, “Wow, we actually look amazing!”
Beyond photography, I truly love connecting with people—whether it’s my couples, their families, or their friends. Weddings are filled with so much energy and emotion, and being part of those moments is something I never take for granted.

In terms of your work and the industry, what are some of the changes you are expecting to see over the next five to ten years?
Photography is always changing, and with AI evolving so quickly, who knows where we’ll be in the next 5-10 years! Technology will keep shaping the way we shoot, edit, and deliver photos in ways we probably can’t even imagine yet.

One trend I hope keeps growing is a focus on relationships in wedding photography—not just the couple, but the moments with their loved ones, too. A single photo can capture so much—a tearful hug, a laugh between friends, a quiet moment with a grandparent. Those are the moments that matter most.

I also hope to see couples spending more time actually enjoying their wedding day and less time stressing over the little details. At the end of the day, the perfect centerpiece or timeline won’t be what they remember—it’ll be the love, the joy, and the people surrounding them. And that’s exactly what I want to capture.
