Conversations with Anna Knobloch

Today we’d like to introduce you to Anna Knobloch

Hi Anna, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Growing up in Austin, I have been surrounded by art and artists. Whether it was live music on South Congress or catching the touring exhibits in Blanton, my days were filled with the work of creative people. It was part of the culture I grew up in. When I told my parents I wanted to go to film school they were not surprised. My summers were spent at my local cinema watching $1 arthouse movies with my mom and brother. It was here that I learned about a new type of art. The art of film.

I kept up my love for film throughout school. After graduating High School I moved to Brooklyn to attend Pratt Institute for film. While there, I was on their Division III volleyball team. I quickly learned that balancing school and athletics was going to be a challenge. After three months at the school I suffered a concussion during one of our weekly volleyball games. School became impossible. I was unable to keep up with the rigorous coursework while trying to heal. Neither was happening. After about a month trying to keep my head above water, I decided to leave school and focus on my health.

I came back to Austin after only four months of living in New York. And while I felt the pain of having to leave behind what I thought would be my New York dream, I never lost focus on what I wanted to do.

I took the rest of the semester to heal fully before I began spring classes at Austin Community College. It was here that my fire for this industry was reignited. Through ACC I have met incredibly smart and talented people.

I graduate this spring with an associates in Radio Television and Film. Through this program and the Austin Community I have met so many young creatives with a drive to make new things.I have learned so much more than I think I ever would have if I stayed in Brooklyn. Seeing others following their passions and sharing it with those they work with has inspired me to get out there and just create. And that’s what I’ve been doing.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Leaving school was a very hard choice for me. It meant that I was leaving behind the safety net of a traditional education. I would be creating my own path and going all in on myself. These past couple years has been a mental battle. Not only just healing from my concussion but working to gain the confidence to trust my instincts.

This confidence has helped me advocate for myself creatively and personally. In any field, you will have to work with people that don’t see your perspective. It is so important to be able to stand up for your vision and what you believe in.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
While I love to write and direct, my true passion is performing. No matter what the format, I love taking on a character. Currently, I perform and teach improv at The Hideout Theater here in Austin. I am also constantly on one set or another whether that be in front or behind the camera.

I think that my background in improv and acting allows me to approach my writing with a better sense of what it will end up looking like visually. I understand how an actors brain works, and therefore am able to craft a story and dialogue that will lead to the most honest performance possible.

I would encourage anyone in this field to work every job on set at least once. Not only does it make you more well rounded, but it gives you a new respect for those you are working with.

Alright so before we go can you talk to us a bit about how people can work with you, collaborate with you or support you?
I post the majority of what I am working on on my instagram. If people want to stay up to date or reach out to me, that would be the best place to do it. I am always looking for new and exciting projects to work on.
