Today we’d like to introduce you to Ashley Morehead.
Ashley, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I think I kind of lucked into chainstitching. After about a month of dating my partner, John, asked if I would be interested in getting a chainstitch embroidery machine because it seem really fun and interesting. I found a vintage machine in Dallas within a few months of that conversation, we drove up to get it, and here we are!
We had every intention of getting this machine for John to play with and to create artwork. But I do remember telling him “I think I’m going to be really good at this.”
I’ve been sewing/crafting (nothing extravagant) since I was a kid, so this was an exciting challenge for me. Learning what thread to use (and how to thread the machine!), how to slow down this goddamn machine so I could TRY to practice my lettering, what settings (not buttons, literal screws and knobs and needle heights??) to adjust was just the beginning, but we got through it.
Once I was confident enough on my lettering/script- we signed up for a vintage market in town. Didn’t have much success selling our own stuff, but!!!! we had some interest from a local market to hire us to chainstitch on their custom tote bags at their next event!
We did our first hired event in May of 2023 and haven’t looked back! Once we did that event, I truly got the itch. I needed to keep doing this! Getting paid to embroider, hang out with John, AND bring joy to people!? Sign me up.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Honestly, I’m not gonna lie, it’s been pretty smooth- again with the lucked into this thing.
It’s like it was meant to be. The biggest struggle has been learning the business side to all of this. Emailing, invoicing, contracts, scheduling, it takes a toll on you and it’s extremely overwhelming! I am so thankful John and I are doing this together and I have someone to help with every step.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
Double Vision specializes in on-site chainstitch embroidery activations for individuals, businesses, and brands. We are hired to bring our vintage chainstitch embroidery machine on-site to events and embroider for guests.
I’m most proud of how much we’ve accomplished in the past 2 years! We’ve worked with big brands such as Stanley (like the cups!), Rolling Stone, Lucchese Bootmaker, and dozens more- and we’ve had a lot of fun doing it!
I think what sets us apart is that we are a partnership. We can chainstitch, do graphic design, lettering, illustration, and rely on each other for support when needed!
Can you talk to us a bit about the role of luck?
No seriously, we completely lucked into this! Of course hard work had to be put in to get to where we are today!!
But I’m serious— this was meant to be. I was working as an auto glass shop manager before this and I was not enjoying it! Now I get to embroider, spend time with my friends, and experience some incredible events!!
I feel extremely fortunate that this has been a mostly easy ride and I’m looking forward to what’s in store for our future!
