Today we’d like to introduce you to Brian Kerschbaum.
Hi Brian, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I was born and raised in Michigan, where my dad, Chuck, made a big career change back in 1999 to start a water feature company called WaterScape. Growing up, I spent most of my summers out on job sites with him, helping build ponds and waterfalls. That’s really where I learned the craft — hands-on, one rock and one pump at a time.
As I got older, I started taking on more responsibility, helping run the business and selling new water features. That’s when I realized how much I loved not just building them, but also working with clients to design something that completely transforms their space.
In 2023, I moved to Austin and started my own company, WaterScape ATX. Now I design, build, and maintain water features — combining everything I learned growing up with my own creative touch. It’s been exciting to carry on the family tradition while building something new in a place that really appreciates outdoor living.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Work came in relatively fast — in fact, at times it’s been hard to keep up. There’s definitely been a learning curve in balancing a busy schedule while maintaining the quality and attention to detail that each project deserves. But overall, it’s been a great experience. Building relationships with new clients here in Austin has been nothing short of awesome, and the local community has really embraced what I do.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Creating water features is truly a work of art. I specialize in designing and building custom ponds and waterfalls that blend naturally into their surroundings. Besides some rough layouts, I don’t do formal designs — when I’m on site, I need to see and feel the rocks to visualize how the water will move and sound. Every stone plays a role in how the final piece comes together.
Each project is completely one of a kind, and that’s what I love most about this work. What sets me apart is that every feature I build is created by hand — not just plans on paper. I take pride in crafting spaces that feel alive and peaceful, where people can step outside and instantly feel a sense of calm.
We all have a different way of looking at and defining success. How do you define success?
For me, it’s pretty straightforward — success means having happy clients and building lasting relationships with them. When someone tells me how much they enjoy sitting by their pond or hearing their waterfall every day, that’s the best kind of reward. It’s not just about finishing a project; it’s about creating something that continues to bring people joy long after I’ve packed up my tools.
