Conversations with Brice Cavanaugh

Today we’d like to introduce you to Brice Cavanaugh.

Hi Brice, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
As a United States Marine, I was formally trained as a Military Working Dog handler/trainer/Kennelmaster, and our unit consistently had Marine families bring their pet dogs to us to help them get the same time of results from their pets as we did from our K9 heroes, that being reliability and enthusiasm of the tasks necessary to integrate into the lives of their owners.

Upon leaving the Marine Corps, I decided to take those skills that I learned and offer them to pet owners that needed everything from basic obedience to severe behavioral issues in an easy to understand format that ensured the success of dogs and humans alike. Over the last thirty years, those processes have been honed to the point that we can help anyone get the results that they are looking for. We have quickly become one of Austin’s largest dog training companies by empowering people with the tools, knowledge and confidence to have a “balanced relationship through clear communication”.

Often times clients remark on the simplicity of the system but also how the principles help them in their own personal lives outside of the dog component.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
While I wouldn’t say smooth at first, I can say that the road has evened out nicely. COVID brought along many challenges for the business, but also for dog owners, which created a bigger opportunity for us to help more people and make a bigger impact on dogs and humans alike. The volume of dogs needing training grew at least 10 times, and now with people starting to go back to work, separation anxiety in the animals are on the rise. This new challenge is yet another opportunity for us to help.

Getting the right team in place, knowing when to scale, mitigating fuel costs, developing digital assets and supply chain issues have been present but navigated well.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
We train dogs (more precisely, we train their owners!) at a high level, taking on many cases that are referred from other training systems or with animals that are given up on. We also help those that are truly trying to get the most out of their relationship with their dogs in a very personalized way as each dog is at a different starting point, each owner has different wants/desires for their relationship with their animal.

The experiences and training that I have had are actually quite unique, everything from starting a K9 unit for Presidential Asset Protection to training chickens! We look at each situation as a puzzle, and we have to take the time to figure out what to do and when to get the results that are best suited for our clientele. And this needs to be done in a fun and easy to understand approach to get the results that we want.

So maybe we end on discussing what matters most to you and why?
Making sure that each client is getting the most out of their relationship with their dog and that each dog has its innate needs met. We are also launching a program for rescue organizations to help with the dogs that are difficult to place so that we can make an impact on the amount of dogs left in kennel environments. This program will be free of charge to the organization so that we can pass on the goodwill that we have received over the years.
