Conversations with Christina Elrod

Today we’d like to introduce you to Christina Elrod.

Hi Christina, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Good morning! Absolutely, I am happy to dive in! My name is Christina, the face behind Sweet Rain Photography. I am an Austin-based wedding, couples, and family photographer with roots in Massachusetts. What truly shaped the path to my photography business was my own wedding day. Like many couples, we hired our photographer based solely on the “price tag” without fully considering their experience, editing style, or personality. Unfortunately, that decision led to a disappointing experience and very few photos we felt connected to.

Already having a love for photography, that experience allowed me to see things in a different light. It truly fueled my passion. I knew I wanted to provide couples and families with photos they could cherish and the kind of experience they deserve.

My style blends documentary storytelling with an editorial approach, allowing me to capture real, unfiltered moments as they unfold while also using gentle guidance for those tasteful, timeless shots. I work with couples and families who want photos that feel like them, and I pride myself on creating a fun, relaxed experience where even the most camera-shy people feel comfortable in front of my lens! I think about the moments we missed out on from our own wedding day, and that continues to spark my creativity and passion for photography.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
In the beginning, one of the biggest challenges was finding my confidence and my voice as a photographer. There’s so much comparison in this industry, especially when you’re first starting out, and it takes time to learn to trust your own eye and lean into what makes your work different as well as letting social media see the “real you” behind the scenes!

It also took a little time learning how to balance the creative side of photography with the business side. I quickly realized that being a photographer means wearing all sorts of hats, and figuring out how to run a sustainable business while staying inspired creatively was a little bit of a learning curve.

Today, I feel incredibly confident and proud of the business I’ve built. I’ve learned to trust my style, my instincts, and the connections I create with my clients. I’ve found a rhythm that allows me to show up fully and to provide an experience that feels genuine and fun!

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I’m a wedding, couples, and family photographer, specializing in capturing genuine moments through a blend of documentary storytelling and editorial imagery. I photograph weddings and elopements, engagements, proposals, maternity, and family sessions, always with a focus on connection and authenticity.

I’m known for creating a relaxed, fun environment where people can truly be themselves, even if they consider themselves “awkward” in front of the camera. My approach is a mix of hands-on and fly on the wall. This means I’m here to gently direct you for those jaw-dropping, editorial portraits, while also quietly documenting the raw, unfiltered emotions between you and your loved ones. My goal is always to make sessions feel less like a photoshoot and more like an experience, one where clients feel comfortable, confident, and enjoy the process!

What I’m most proud of is the experience I provide. From the first inquiry to the final gallery, I focus on communication, trust, and making my clients feel cared for every step of the way. Knowing that people walk away not only loving their photos but also feeling good about themselves and their experience means everything to me.

I believe what sets me apart is my ability to balance artistry with approachability. I bring an editorial eye to real-life moments, while also being someone clients feel they can easily talk to and lean on throughout the process. Whether I’m photographing a wedding in Austin or traveling back to New England, I pour my heart into telling each story in a way that feels true to the people in front of my camera.

We’d be interested to hear your thoughts on luck and what role, if any, you feel it’s played for you?
I feel incredibly lucky when it comes to the people I’ve met along the way. When I was first starting out, second shooting alongside other photographers played a huge role in my growth. Those opportunities not only helped me learn the flow of weddings and build confidence behind the camera, but also allowed me to form meaningful connections within the photography community that I still value today. I still love second shooting and connecting with other photographers today!

I also consider myself extremely lucky for the trust my clients have placed in me. Every couple and family who chose me, especially early on, helped shape my business and pushed me to grow creatively and professionally. Their support and belief in my work made it possible for me to build a business I’m truly proud of.
