Today we’d like to introduce you to Christina Steele
Christina, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
My story is alot like stories your readers might have. Varied, complex, but also with a common thread woven throughout. I’m a multi-ethnic creative. I’m a mother. I’m a human living in this complex world looking for connection and a soft spot to land. I’ve had a plethora of varied jobs throughout my 40 years and while there have been lots of ups and downs, I always come back to music. Or maybe I could say music always finds me again.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The complexities I touched on earlier have certainly added necessary nuance to my life. There have been times when I’ve been homeless and without a family. Or the time I decided to become a single mother at the age of 22. Or the flight I took to Barcelona with only $25 euros in my pocket! Life has been nothing short of daring or interesting. My personal struggle has been an inherant promise to myself: to live life at my own pace. Not the pace society, family, or religion had set for me, but rather exist in the spaces I was curious about and have the faith I could rise from the sunken bits into a more whole and beautiful space with more light and love.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
What a great question! I would say an aspect that sets me apart from others the most is my eye for artistry. I just have a good eye! It’s not a typical characteristic to be known for, but it truly informs every level of my creative practices. When I’m shooting backstage photography for a band, something interesting always manages to catch my eye. If I’m adding strings, (namely violin) to a new composition of music it’s my auditory eye that tells me what to add. Even my wardrobe and home are very influenced by what catches my eye. I have an affinity for the underrepresented and that always shows up in my work. I find the moments/people who are overlooked to be the most fascinating.
We’re always looking for the lessons that can be learned in any situation, including tragic ones like the Covid-19 crisis. Are there any lessons you’ve learned that you can share?
Covid 19 was an incredible moment for humankind. It really was a collective pause that I’m not sure we will ever receive again. What a gift. A moment to step back while time stopped and re-evaluate our belief systems. Many lives were lost during that season and it’s never easy to say goodbye to loved ones-near or far. When we were in the deepest of that crisis, I really went inward and sort of never came out. I’m much more spiritual and my connection to the inner man is much stronger and more clear than it was before Covid-19.
