Conversations with Cierra Madison

Today we’d like to introduce you to Cierra Madison

Hi Cierra, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Im in my early 30’s and I feel like I’ve already lived 4 or 5 lives. I deeply believe in going where the energy feels fresh. I follow my passion and my spirit and I think that’s what led me not only to Austin, but to DJing and building Sunday Sessions. I had no idea I would be here doing the things I’m doing but I think that’s the magic of life.

I built a career in Atlanta doing Set Design for film, but experienced some heartbreak and decided to leave. Austin just felt good to me. I was sold when I found Asmbly Makerspace, which is an incredible nonprofit space offering so many diverse resources to makers, builders, and designers.

I intended to build a business in woodworking and was also deeply immersed in a healing journey- reconnecting with my body, the land. and plant medicine. I thought that would be my path & it felt purposeful to me. I also eventually found passion in DJing but I was resistant because at a time when there’s so much suffering and dysfunction in the world, DJing felt self-serving and purposeless. But that couldn’t have been farther from the truth.

My friends encouraged me to get out there so I went out with a friend to play in a space that felt comfortable to me- in nature at a park. What started with a handful of friends listening to me spin grew to almost 400 people of color spending time together in nature on a beautiful Sunday evening. Nothing has been the same since.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Absolutely not. I’m seriously not even sure how I’ve managed to keep going this long.
There have been challenges with relationships, support, funding, the weather!, the list goes on… But they weren’t losses- just lessons.

I’ve learned what it actually means to be in community with people (how to receive maintain reciprocal relationships), how to balance open arms with discernment. I’ve learned the balance of creativity and professionalism.

Galvanizing support and funding have also been huge hurdles. Sunday Sessions has been powered by love and the sporadic generous donations we’ve been able to collect. I’m looking forward to that changing very soon.

I think the biggest lesson of all has been to know my thresholds & establish healthy boundaries so I can find work-life balance. I’ve really overextended myself at times- feeling like I had something to prove or I had to show up because this meant something to the community (classic recovering people-pleaser syndrome). But I’m learning everyday. Im grateful there’s been grace in the midst of mistakes and missteps. I’m only gonna keep getting better.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
These days, I am a DJ by profession. I have a deep love affair with music- all kinds and forms but House (especially when sprinkled with some soul) definitely has my heart. My sound is generally groovy, funky, jazzy, eclectic, & versatile. I love to play at hotels, restaurants, galleries, curated events, in nature, on rooftops, and for festivals. I imagine someday taking my work on the road and wouldn’t mind getting to dip my toe into more World Club & Dance music.

I also love to work with my hands and build things. I have a degree architecture and dream of someday building my own home.

I’ve studied herbalism, yoga, & energy work and practice a lot of different healing modalities. Wellness will always be a part of my path and offerings because I believe the whole is equal to the sum of its parts (or whatever that quote is). But the closer each of us is to being well, the better we will be to each other and ultimately the better off our world will be.

I have lots of plans and visions but ultimately I’m here for the journey and excited to see where life will take me next.
