Conversations with Connor Nutt

Today we’d like to introduce you to Connor Nutt

Hi Connor , thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I wanted to create a comedy show that showcased the incredible comedic talent we have here in Austin while offering something fresh and unique. I’ve always been a fan of the old-school Las Vegas era—performers like Frank Sinatra and the rest of the Rat Pack. Inspired by that timeless, sophisticated vibe, I thought it would be fun to host a show where comedians performed in suits and cocktail attire, encouraging the audience to dress up and join in on the experience.

I pitched the idea to my friend and now co-host, Scott Wharton. He immediately saw the vision and was on board. In January 2023, we hosted our very first show at The Studio (now called Austin Garden & Studio) on E. 6th Street. It sold out with about 100 attendees, and we knew right away that we were onto something special.

Since then, we’ve found a permanent home at Rozco’s Comedy Club on E. 7th Street. One of the most exciting aspects of the show has been audience participation—about 75% of attendees dress up for the event, often in creative and extravagant outfits. Those who don’t tend to come back with friends, fully embracing the dress-up element the second time around.

The show’s local success allowed us to expand beyond Austin. In 2024, we hit the road, performing in cities like Denver, Phoenix, Los Angeles, Chicago, Fort Worth, and Houston. We continue to host monthly shows in Austin at Rozco’s Comedy Club and Cap City Comedy Club, along with a new monthly residency at the Punch Line in Houston.

Looking ahead, we’re thrilled to be part of the Moontower Comedy Festival in Austin this April. The journey has been incredible, and we can’t wait to keep building on this experience.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Overall, we’ve seen steady, constant growth. Sometimes we’ll get booked on shows that fall on Monday through Thursday, and it can be a challenge to get people out and dressed up on a weekday. A good portion of people now work from home and prefer their sweatpants over a suit and tie. Still, we’ve found that there’s a segment of the audience always looking for any excuse to dress up, come out, and have a great time—no matter what day of the week it is.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I’m most proud of Scott and I being able to step up to big moment and execute a successful and entertaining product. We couldn’t do that without the amazing talent of comedians that have shared the stages with us.

What quality or characteristic do you feel is most important to your success?
Being able to provide a unique experience that isn’t offered elsewhere. Not letting mistakes define our business and using setbacks as a way to learn and exceed in future challenges.
