Today we’d like to introduce you to Da’kota Gaines
Hi Da’Kota, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I founded Onyx Gem Aesthetics out of a personal frustration with the lack of consistency and quality in the nail services available in my area. After repeatedly being dissatisfied with the work I was receiving, I decided to take matters into my own hands. I enrolled in nail school and, within just seven months, became a licensed nail technician. Since then, my clientele has grown steadily, and I’m always welcoming new clients to experience my services.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The journey wasn’t always smooth in the beginning, as building a steady clientele took time. Some days I would have 3 to 4 clients, while other days, I might have none. During those slower times, I had to find creative ways to stay afloat and continue generating income. Patience and persistence were key as I worked to establish my business and grow my client base.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am a manicurist who specializes in acrylic nails and nail art, with a particular passion for pedicures. These areas will always be my niche. What sets me apart from others in the industry is my flexibility and availability. I offer appointments starting as early as 5 a.m., with my last appointment of the day at 9 p.m., making it easier for clients to find a time that fits their busy schedules.
Can you talk to us about how you think about risk?
I believe that risk-taking is an essential part of growth, both personally and professionally. While I don’t necessarily see myself as a reckless risk-taker, I do recognize the importance of calculated risks when it comes to pursuing your goals. For example, deciding to go to nail school and transition into a completely new career was a significant risk for me. Leaving a more stable path to start my own business required stepping out of my comfort zone, especially considering the uncertain income in the early stages.
I’ve also taken risks with my business model, like offering extended hours and being flexible with appointments, which I knew might be challenging to sustain at first. But I took those risks with the belief that they would meet an unmet need in my community, and they’ve paid off in terms of both client satisfaction and business growth.
Overall, I view risk as an opportunity to push boundaries and innovate, even though it comes with its own challenges. I think success often requires balancing risk with careful planning and a willingness to adapt as things unfold.
