Conversations with Etonia Curry

Today we’d like to introduce you to Etonia Curry.

Hi Etonia, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
My name is Etonia Curry, I am 29 years old, I was born and raised in Charlotte, NC , and I have a younger sister who is 7 years younger and a 7 year old niece. I am also a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated. While growing up I watched my mother bake pound cakes and other desserts mainly because I wanted to taste the batter or the icing, but as I got older, I began to make cakes for her and eventually started to sell slices of cake for $1 in my high school classes. I continued to bake throughout high school and some of college until my mother became sick of cancer. Within a matter of 9 months, my mother went from diagnosis to stage 4 and passed 2 days before Christmas. After her passing in 2013, I stopped baking for years until towards the end of 2019, by which time I had moved from my home city to Melbourne, FL. After much convincing from friends, I decided to pick up baking again during the height of the pandemic and make it a part time business in remembrance of my mother. I took a 6 week business class and Cakes By Tha Pound was born! From that moment, my business has grown and I have added a variety of pound cake flavors and sizes. In March 2022, I made the move to Austin, Texas and I have been participating in different pop up shops to get my business name out there. I look forward in continuing to grow my business!

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has not been a smooth road at all. One of the biggest struggles has been trying to get my name and business out and gaining clients since moving to a new city. Other struggles include learning how to operate a business while working as an engineer full time and figuring out the best way to ship cakes to customers.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
Outside of my business, Cakes By Tha Pound, I work as a Verification Engineer full time. I have a B.S in Computer Engineering and a M.S. in Electrical Engineering. I develop tests that verify the functionality of other designers’ code before it is placed on hardware. I have worked in this field for 4.5 years and prior to moving to the tech field, I was in space and defense. I am proud of making sure that products will function properly before they are put out in the field.

What were you like growing up?
Growing up, I was a very active child! I went to an art school for middle school and majored in dance and chorus. In high school, I played softball and volleyball while in the International Baccalaureate Program, which is a rigorous program that allows for college credit for some courses upon high school graduation. I have always been an outgoing child and love making friends. Outside of school and sports, I was active in Girl Scouts and participating in different community service activities.
