Today we’d like to introduce you to Greg Siller
Hi Greg, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
Lando’s came about by accident. We were looking for a couple of decent bottles of wine for a dinner, but were extremely unsuccessfully in getting what wanted. We tried smaller stores and they were all sleazy. Then we tried bigger stores and these were stocked by mostly pretty labels, but quality of wine was terrible. We also realized that consumers had almost no option for a liquor or wine shop with open pricing or a place that provided consumer education. So we decided to start our own location to test out how it goes. Our first location was well received, and now we have two locations (with more coming soon hopefully – we are looking).
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
When we first started, everything was very hard – we had no idea of city approvals, what inventory to carry, how to price, how to attract customers, and everything else. Overall, the hardest challenge has been knowing who to trust and in what capacity, be it suppliers, general contractors and laborers, city of austin permit expeditors, industry experts, etc. – all of it has been a journey of discovery
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
Lando’s specializes in curating the best quality to price ratio products. We invest significant effort in not only learning about every product we carry, but also helping consumers understand the difference in value or quality of each product. We also invest significant resources in finding the right fit for a customer (small or big) and give beverage alcohol consumers an Apple store experience
What do you like and dislike about the city?
Austin is an excellent melting pot of highly varying ideologies, social and economic levels, tolerance and rigidity with kindness. It is an excellent place to visit, live, or retire. Food, people, community, layout, and more are all great and getting better.
The heat in August is definitely challenging. Also, as the city grows, it should try to invest more in its infrastructure
Pricing:
- Our prices are generally in-line with bigger chain locations
- When we are unable to come close to prices of bigger store, we clearly identify this on price tags to let consumers know something is overpriced in our store
- Our our pricing is fully open and clearly displayed on tasting cards, which we have for each and every product we carry
- We also only stock products where we thing the price makes sense vs. quality and brando f product
