Today we’d like to introduce you to Hellie Horror.
Hi Hellie, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
Hells Oddities started off just as a hobby back in November of 2020. Earlier that year my stepdad had passed away, he was big into working with skulls and had left behind a few unfinished projects. When he was still alive, I would always ask him if I could have or paint the skulls/bones that he had and of course, his response was always “no.” When he passed, I decided to finish up the projects he hadn’t. Soon after posting the finished pieces to my very smell art account, I think I’d had maybe 100 followers at the time, I had lots of friends and followers ask for commissioned pieces similar. Framing skulls and working with animal remains quickly turned from hobby to full-time business in a matter of months. I’ve now been working full-time as an artist for 20 months, so almost two years. I make jewelry, home decor, candles and much more all made with ethically sourced animal remain and insects. I am always branching out into creating new products and always get to work on really cool one of a kind custom pieces for my clients. Since starting my business back in 2020 I have had the opportunity of selling my work in multiple storefronts as well as opening up a “sister business” Digital Resurrectionist, working with clay, acrylic, gouache, and digital art.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The biggest struggles I’ve encountered with starting my business and essentially working for myself full time is having to adjust from doing something I love as a hobby to it being my main source of income and not being taken seriously because of my age. As a creative I sometimes find myself in ruts and periods of art block and lack of motivation to create and it’s difficult to get out of that place especially with the stress of knowing I have to force myself to make things because I have bills due.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
Hell’s Oddities specializes in art and jewelry with ethically sourced animal remains. My main goal is to turn something majority of people would find gross or disturbing into something beautiful and essentially giving the animals “another life” or I like to say I’ve been “bringing the dead back to life since 2020.” I’m most known for my “creepy cute” aesthetic or as a customer once coined me “hello kitty meets Edgar Allen Poe” and using the color pink in a lot of my work. I’m most proud of the fact I have been able to provide my clients with custom work to memorialize their pets, symbolize something in their life or a passed loved one, or just create something completely special and unique for them.
What quality or characteristic do you feel is most important to your success?
My success so far is all due to the fact that I am very driven and very much the type of person to just go after what I want. When I commit to something or have an idea I just go all in and do everything I can to achieve such.
