Today we’d like to introduce you to Icosa Collective
Hi ICOSA , it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
ICOSA Collective is an artist-run space that showcases a diverse range of contemporary art and programming. Founded in 2015, ICOSA was originally located within Pump Project’s former studio complex on Shady Lane. In June 2018 ICOSA Collective moved to nearby Canopy, east Austin’s blossoming gallery and studio hub at 916 Springdale Road. The gallery houses track lighting, high ceilings, with 1500 square feet of exhibition space and small gift shop. ICOSA Collective is a non profit organization that is home to a collective group of 20 artists, well known nationally and internationally, who have received numerous awards and grants and whose work is featured in various collections.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
The biggest struggle ICOSA Collective faces is the rising cost of living in Austin and how it effects the rise in property tax and overall the rent for spaces that feature contemporary art. Being financially sustainable is important to many creative spaces that give opportunities to artists in a range of mediums. Other than member dues, what keeps ICOSA Collective operating is the support and donations from our community through events like our annual fundraisers and exhibit openings.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
ICOSA Collective is a 20 artists member group committed to providing exhibition space free of the constraints of the traditional gallery model, as well as, a platform for dialoguing with audiences. ICOSA Collective’s culture empowers artists to develop their creative and professional ambitions, continuously culminating in a wide range of events, from art shows to educational programs, as well as in cooperative partnerships with diverse organizations.
ICOSA Collective’s programming ignites ideas and relationships between the Austin and global art communities: compliments of its member artists who are producing some of the region’s highest-caliber contemporary art and art discussion. ICOSA preserves a sustainable lifestyle for local artists and engages in dialogue with art lovers throughout the region and beyond.
Do you have any advice for those looking to network or find a mentor?
Attending exhibit openings is the best way to get to know the community especially potential mentors, collaborators and friends.
