Conversations with Jamiece Spears

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jamiece Spears.

Hi Jamiece, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I’ve always been something like a creative. I love crafting, solving puzzles, problem-solving, and making stuff “pretty”. Right after my oldest daughter was born, I started Cuddles by Jay, which was a baby gift company and allowed me to utilize all the fun things I like to do. Then her 1st birthday came around. I was enchanted with decorating, planning, and watching my vision come to life, that was in 2013.

Fast forward five years, I learned that my grandmother was a caterer, florist, and event decorator way before it was popular. I thought I would name my business Festive Occasions and so when I took an event administration class the fall of 2018 that is exactly what I named my “pretend” business in class. I spent the entire semester immersed in what I felt was my dream. The research, the planning, the proposals, the presentations of the different events it really opened my eyes to this could be my next career journey. Midway through the semester, I figured out this is what I was going to do. My uncle gave m a grant for $1,000 with that, I had my logo made, business cards and I did my LLC filing with the Secretary of State, September 27, 2018 my official business Visionary Affairs was born. It has been a wild fun ride ever since.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The biggest struggle I think was finding a name that represented what types of events I wanted to plan without limiting myself to one particular niche. Motivation to keep going when all hope seems lost especially during 2020 when there were no events being held. The pivot and change my business had to endure was really hard. Marketing is also another struggle. You cannot be a silent entrepreneur, people have to know who you are. It took a little while, but now I have no problem telling people what I do, how they can find me, or how I can help them.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
Visionary Affairs is an event management & design company, where from conception to execution we make planning your next affair a flawless experience. My company is known for exemplary customer service, exceptional planning, and extraordinary vision. I take a consultation conversation and make it into a fabulous event. We are currently doing a lot of wedding planning & coordinating as well as themed parties and birthday parties. I have a vast network of photographers, event rentals, calligraphers and specialty item rentals to mold your ideas into a vision that my team and myself execute. I am most proud of the event that I planned in November 2020 with the Mayor of Houston in attendance and Shelia Jackson Lee as well. This event came across my desk in the form of a Facebook post in a Facebook mom group and it was my favorite event to plan to date.

Are there any important lessons you’ve learned that you can share with us?
Perseverance & Networking. Even when the going gets tough, the tough keep going. Throughout 2020, I was afraid I would have to shutter my business and someone in my network mentioned I needed to go virtual. October 2020, I planned my first virtual international conference and it was a hit. In business, people do business with people that they know, like, and trust. It is vital as a business owner that we get our names out there and don’t be silent about what you do and how you do it. Build relationships, especially with other business owners. Those people become the people who keep you motivated and help you through hard times and dry spells in your business. They also can become referral partners for you if you build those relationships.
