Today we’d like to introduce you to Jason Carrier.
Hi Jason, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, let’s briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today.
I started in the bar business in college at the University of Texas as a door guy and worked my way up the ladder to being a GM. I opened my first bar with my 2 best friends in 2002 at age 25. I’ve owned 11 bars over the past 20 years—currently own 5 bars. In 2020 when Covid shut down all 5 of my bars, including 2 that I had just opened 5 months earlier, I didn’t know what to do or if I was losing everything. The Mexican restaurant closest to my house had closed right before Covid, and I thought I needed to get to work something, so I worked to open my Tex-Mex restaurant named after my mom, who ran Mexican restaurants my entire childhood, signed the lease March of 2021 and opened precisely a year later, in 2022. We’ve been open little over a year.
Can you talk to us about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned? Looking back, has it been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Doing a complete remodel during covid was challenging because the supply chain was going crazy. Staffing was an even more significant challenge. To staff a brand new restaurant concept with no history or sister location to build off of at a time when many of the workforces had gotten used to not working for a couple of years.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I’ve owned my bars and restaurant for over 20 years now, and our success comes down to service and taking care of the guest, and aiming for them to leave pleasantly surprised by every aspect of their experience.
We’d like to hear your thoughts on luck and what role, if any, you feel it’s played for you.
Luck is luck, and making the most of any situation decides if it’s bad or good.
