Today we’d like to introduce you to Jerome Detotto.
Hi Jerome, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
It seems as though I was destined to be a musician. My mother tells me that as a toddler, when she would take me to matinee performances of the local symphony, I would stand up in my seat and pretend to conduct the orchestra. In 3rd grade I chose to learn the clarinet, which I continued to play through high school. A couple of years later I got a guitar, and in Junior High took up the string bass and played in the school orchestra. This led to my primary performing role as an electric bassist.
I was born in Connecticut, but grew up in upstate New York – in and around Rochester and Syracuse. I graduated from Oswego State University, where snowfall of 200 inches per season is the norm, and took one semester of piano as an elective. It’s not too much of a surprise that I soon afterwards relocated to sunny Phoenix, Arizona, where I spent a decade working and playing bass in cover bands at nightclubs. After returning to Albany, NY for a year, I moved out to Austin, Texas, a city with a strong musical spirit, which I have made my home.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Starting from scratch in two different cities (Phoenix and Austin) was challenging, especially the first time moving to Phoenix, as it was my initial break from living at home with my family. Much of the time music needed to take a back seat while I found work and built new relationships.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
A few years ago I learned about creating music specifically for sync licensing, which is music for use in television programs, advertisements and films. I had become familiar with using computer software for composing and recording music, so I started making music with this in mind.
I have composed more than 125 music tracks over the past several years. More than 50 of these have been accepted into exclusive and non-exclusive music libraries. I also have music available through several micro-licensing online marketplaces. My music has been licensed for use on television programs on HULU and Oprah Winfrey Network.
I have released an Electronic Dance Music album, along with some holiday music, to the music streaming sites like Spotify and Apple Music. I am especially proud of my collaboration with artist/songwriter Janet Ruth on the song “Baby Don’t Let Go (It’s Christmas Time)”.
We’d love to hear about any fond memories you have from when you were growing up?
Attending minor league baseball games with my father.
