Conversations with John Dempsy

Today we’d like to introduce you to John Dempsy.

Hi John, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today.
I started playing and writing songs when I was about ten years old. I started waking up late at night and having to find a pen and paper to write down the words in my head. The music was secondary at first. I tried to make sense of the words pouring out of my head. Over the years, I’ve honed that craft and learned to appreciate the songs given to me. They are, after all, a gift. Every word, every breath, every phrase is a gift. I’ve understood that I’m a channel, not the source. My brother Steve and I have played music most of our lives. I’ve toured and played with many artists over the years, as did he. During the lockdown in 2020, he and I got together and wrote a group of songs that became my latest EP, Beautiful Wreck. Those songs opened doors that were distant dreams before. I’m so thankful we spent that time together writing and recording.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been smooth?
My life has been a chaotic collection of ups and downs. The road has never been smooth. I’ve been hungry, rejected, addicted, overwhelmed, beaten up, and broke just as I’ve been appreciated, praised, thankful, and on top of the world. I’m grateful for every second, and I wouldn’t change a thing.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I’m a writer and a producer. I sing the songs that I write because I’m thankful for them, and I feel I have a responsibility to the song to play it for whoever was meant to hear it. Over the years, I’ve also learned to record and mix because it’s the easiest way to create a tangible version of the vision I have in my head of that artist or band. The folks know me I have worked with for being able to pull the best version of that person as an artist out of themselves. I feel that’s what the best producers do see the best version of you inside and make it come out.

The crisis has affected us all in different ways. How has it affected you, and any important lessons or epiphanies you can share with us?
It only took the world shutting down for my brother and me to write a project together. I learned that there’s no time to wait on your dreams. You have to realize them now. We are not promised tomorrow, after all.
