Conversations with Jose Estrada

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jose Estrada.

Hi Jose, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
My passion for art started in high school doing film photography. Went through several majors before deciding to study Printmaking at Texas State. I knew this path was right for me so I decided to explore different mediums which lead me to ceramics. I immediately bonded with the process since it was a similar tedious work as Printmaking. After I graduated I felt lost not having a studio to work in. Me and my partner build our separate studios at the house during quarantine. This leads me to start my future career as a ceramicist.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
My mindset is smooth but the journey is rough. The toughest part was understanding the business side of ceramics and that it’s not a hobby anymore but my life career. I had lots of experience at school so starting off was smoother than I expected. I’m constantly growing and improving my work but still have so much to learn.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am a printmaker who fell in love with mud. Drawing and working with my hands is what I enjoy the most. My work consists of ceramic bowls, plates, cups and planters. I mostly do a commission for dinnerware but am always open for new ideas. I’m proud of how far I’ve come in my art form. What sets me apart is my perspective in life and how I translate that into my work.

We’d be interested to hear your thoughts on luck and what role, if any, you feel it’s played for you?
I don’t necessarily believe in luck I believe everything happens for a reason. I work hard for what I want and have generous people around me that helped me reach my goals.
