Conversations with Kara Palmer

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kara Palmer.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I began making homecoming mums in 2023 when my son entered his freshman year of high school. I had planned to create a mum for whoever he chose to take to homecoming. While he didn’t bring a date that year, his stepsisters were more than happy to step in and became my first creations.

After sharing photos on social media, a few parents reached out to ask if I could design mums for their students as well. By the end of that season, I realized how much joy I found in crafting these pieces. The process became especially meaningful as I was undergoing treatment for breast cancer at the time. Creating mums provided a much needed therapeutic outlet and sense of normalcy.

That experience led me to consider turning my passion into a side business alongside my career as a registered nurse. I immersed myself in learning the craft by joining a large community of mum makers, attending workshops to refine my techniques, and building collaborative relationships with other creators in my area. I officially launched my business, secured a name, and created a website.

In my second year, I focused on growth by marketing through social media, distributing flyers at local high schools, and building brand awareness. The results exceeded my expectations, with orders increasing by more than 600%.

Since then, my offerings have expanded beyond traditional homecoming mums and garters to include graduation items such as leis and cap toppers, as well as 3D-printed products like mascot fan chains and keychains. I also create custom spirit wear, including T-shirts, boot tassels, and bag tassels.

Today, what started as a personal project has grown into a year-round business that continues to evolve. It not only fuels my creativity, but also serves as a reminder of resilience, purpose, and the unexpected paths that can emerge from life’s challenges.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The journey has not been without its challenges. Building a business from the ground up meant learning every aspect of entrepreneurship, from marketing and branding to sourcing quality materials at competitive prices. There are long nights and full weekends dedicated to fulfilling orders and keeping up with demand.

Through it all, I have been fortunate to have a strong support system. The community of fellow mum makers has been incredibly collaborative and generous with their knowledge, and my family has stood by me every step of the way, even during the busiest seasons when my time is stretched thin.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
My designs blend classic Texas tradition with a modern, personalized touch. Having grown up in Texas and worn homecoming mums myself, I have a deep appreciation for the timeless elements that celebrate school pride and spirit. At the same time, I recognize that today’s students want to express their individuality, so I intentionally incorporate custom details that make each piece unique while still honoring tradition.

What I am most proud of is the reaction from my customers when they see their finished piece for the first time. There is something incredibly rewarding about bringing their vision to life and creating something that feels personal and meaningful to them.

What sets me apart is that I approach each design as more than just a product, it’s a collaboration. I focus on understanding each student’s style and story, then translating that into a one of a kind creation. Being part of those moments, and knowing I helped create something they truly love, is what brings me the greatest joy and fulfillment.

How do you think about luck?
A series of unexpected doors led me to this path. Having a teenager entering high school created the initial opportunity, but it was my breast cancer diagnosis that gave the work deeper meaning, providing a much-needed distraction and creative outlet during a difficult time. Balancing a demanding career in healthcare, I found myself drawn to something that restored a sense of calm and control.

What may have started as circumstance has become something much more intentional. This business gives me a space to express myself, reconnect with purpose, and create balance in my life. It has brought not only joy, but a deep sense of fulfillment that I didn’t realize I was missing.
